Hello Cohn Zohn, this is Grant.

I just read the great Matt Maiocco’s piece on the Michael Crabtree – Vernon Davis squabble. Here’s my impression:

Mike Singletary has created a double standard on the team. When he started as a head coach, he made his splash kicking Davis off the field during the game and humiliating him to the press after it. No one’s bigger than the team was his message, and Davis bought in. Then Jed York extended Singletary’s contract. They wanted the master motivator to keep their team blue collar.

Then the 49ers drafted Crabtree, who is a diva, who held out last year, and who has not played in the preseason this year.

I always assumed the reason the 49ers drafted a diva like Crabtree was because they assumed Singletary could get the most out of those types. Just look at what he did for Davis. But Singletary has never given Crabtree the Davis Treatment. He’s done nothing.

Davis had to give Crabtree the Davis Treatment. Odd. Said Singletary, “He did the right thing, but he did it the wrong way.” Oh really? It seems to me he did things the Singletary way, or the old-Singletary way.

So if Vernon Davis is now the head motivator and team enforcer, what is Singletary? The peace-maker? Each day it becomes more and more difficult to figure out what exactly he does for the 49ers. He does a lot of standing and watching at practice. Apparently he doesn’t call out his players anymore, unless the player is a third-string quarterback.

All this makes Singletary seem like a guy who stands for less than he says he does. It makes the I Want Winners Rant seem like nothing more than a show. To read Matt’s article click here.
