A new storyline has emerged about Jimmy Raye, former offensive coordinator. According to this line — I call it revisionist history — Jimmy Raye wasn’t such a bad coordinator. He was a good soldier who followed Mike Singletary’s orders and Singletary ordered that horrid offense. If Singletary ordered something better, Raye could have produced that.

I am not making a case for Singletary. The evidence suggests he is not a good head coach and his offensive philosophy is Stone Age. But none of that makes Raye a good coordinator. He’s the one who couldn’t get in the plays on time. Because of him Alex Smith has to wear that thing on his forearm.

Raye is a mediocre coordinator at best. Aside from Singletary no one else wanted him. He’s been in the league many years but rarely got to call plays. He is a journeyman.

He deserved to get fired. He is not the fall guy.  None of this makes Singletary good or Jed York good. But Raye had to go.

If the Niners know what they are doing — do they? — others will go sooner rather than later.
