I am on a semi-vacation, am not writing columns until the Raiders game on Sunday and am not driving to Santa Clara. I read in several places Troy Smith gets the start on Sunday in St. Louis.

The fact that Singletary goes back and forth between the Smiths means neither one is good enough. The one who does not play always is better in Singletary’s mind. Troy did well against the Rams first time out but he had Frank Gore back then. Also the league had not figured him out. It won’t be so easy this time.

If I were coach, I would start Alex and go to Troy fast if Alex loused up. But it doesn’t really matter. It’s not like it’s a choice between Joe Montana and John Elway.

Crazy as this sounds I expect the Niners to win. I also expect them to host the round one playoff game.
