This is an excerpted version of Jed York’s post-dumping-Singletary press conference Monday at high noon. Notice I ask the first few questions and then come back at the end.

Cohn: Can you assure the fan base you have the expertise to hire a general manager?

Jed: Yes.

Cohn: Who are you going to talk to to help you?

Jed: Who would you talk to if you were me?

Cohn: I would talk to very good owners and general managers around the league who know more than you do.

Jed: Like my uncle who’s won five Super Bowls and some other folks like the Krafts and folks like that who have built championship-caliber teams.

Cohn: I wish you could tell us some more. This is for the fan base, not just for us.

Jed: I think my uncle is probably the best person out there for me to talk to. There are a lot of other people I will talk to but my uncle is the person I’ll get the most advice from.

What is the timetable?

We want to talk to a lot of people this week. There are a lot of people that are experienced and qualified that are not with teams. I want to knock out as many people as we can this week and then open it up if we need to going into the next week.

You want to hire a general manager and coach?

Yes, the general manager will hire the coach.

Why did you reach the decision you need a general manager?

We had a general manager last year. If you recall Scot left for reasons that weren’t expected. So it’s not that I’m opposed to a general manager. I believe you should have a general manager. We’ve been evaluating Trent sort of in a GM-like role this year. I’ve talked to a lot of people that have been in and around the game this season, trying to get their feedback on sort of how to build teams, what’s been successful what hasn’t been successful. When you look at some of the teams that have been successful it’s not about hiring the flashiest name as your GM or coach. It’s about making sure the GM and head coach are really working together. The general manager is the person who’s going to live and die with the coach.

What kind of coach do you want?

Offensive minded, defensive minded, like that? I wouldn’t say we’re strictly looking at an offensive-minded head coach. I think we’ve had a lot of problems on the offensive side of the ball so if it’s not an offensive-minded head coach it’s got to be a coach that has experience in dealing with the NFL, in dealing with putting together a staff. If it is a defensive-minded head coach it’s got to be someone who understands how to put an offensive staff together.

Will the GM be the central figure of the organization?

The head coach is always going to be the face of the team. The coach reports to the general manager but ultimately we all work for the coach when the season is here. We want to make sure the general manager is the guy that’s grinding behind the scenes, putting together the draft, putting together the structure of the organization.

Do you want a coach who’s a proven winner?

It’s important to me to get a general manager and have the general manager select the head coach.

Is it important to get a general manager that has general manager experience?

We want to look at as many people as we can to come to the right conclusion.

Will you be centering on the people who don’t currently have jobs in the NFL?

Those are the only people we can talk to this week.

Did you think about firing Singletary several weeks ago?

I thought about it but we had a chance be a playoff team and I didn’t think making that change would have been the right decision. Maybe in hindsight that was a wrong decision. When I look at our team we just hadn’t gotten it done. When I look at where we are right now and where we need to be in the future we’re not a playoff-team. We’re not the caliber team the 49ers should be.

Do you have a date to get a GM?

There’s no time frame. It’s getting the right guy.

What about Trent Baalke?

Trent will be part of this interview process. He’s been functioning as a GM-like person.

Who will you consider for coach?

There will be some coaches that aren’t retained that are potential candidates for us. There are a lot of coaches on the street that are potential candidates and there are guys who have been coordinators who have been successful. So there’s broad array. That’s not me putting that list together. Our general manager is going to put that list together.

Are you going to ask the Browns for permission to talk to Holmgren?

I haven’t asked permission to talk to anybody. The only people we’re talking to now are the people we have the ability to talk to.

Cohn: When you interview GM candidates who else will be in the room with you doing the interviewing?

Jed: it depends. I’ll have some folks whether they’re here, whether it’s my uncle who has helped set some of these things up, getting his feedback on some of the potential candidates. It will probably be just me and I’ll be the one who’s hiring the general manager.

Will your dad or Paraag be in there?

No it will be just me.

If Trent doesn’t get the GM job will he be part of the organization?

That will be up to the GM.
