I’m reading the papers this morning and there’s a lot of Cam Newton stuff. How Newton was the big news at the combine and how he made an entrance and how he got the superstar treatment and blah blah blah.

Look, Newton was a very good college quarterback. He is not an NFL prospect at the level of Andrew Luck. No way. It is not clear he will be an exceptional NFL quarterback. He could be middle of the road or he could be a dud. No one knows. If he’s available when the Niners choose at No. 7 they would be nuts to take him.

So why was he such a big deal at the combine? Here’s my theory. Reporters get assignments. They go places — in this case to the combine. They have to write about something. Newton is available. They write about him, as they should. Call him the news of the day. A day later, there’s something else and Newton goes back to his life.
