I appeared on Comcast Monday evening. The panel played an under/over game. Will Barry Zito win more than 5 1/2 games this season? I went under. I said and I quote — “he doesn’t stand a chance in hell” of doing that.

Well, now he has one win. I still don’t think he’ll get six — we’re really talking about six. Why? Because he isn’t good enough. Because he beat the Cubs and they’re no big deal. Because Jonathan Sanchez will come back and Zito won’t get all that many starts.

You may think I’m being negative — I am — but I’ve seen Zito in action and I just don’t believe in him.

On to a language question. I have thought about the name Zito. I don’t know much Italian but I know there’s a dish called baked ziti. It was popular in Brooklyn when I was a kid. Could it be that Zito is the singular of ziti? Perhaps. If so, it would make me think Zito’s ancestors were ziti makers at one time. Can anyone shed light on this linguistic puzzler?
