I had asked in my Sunday column if Tom Brady would equal or surpass Joe Montana in stature and greatness by winning his fourth Super Bowl. Well, Brady didn’t. He now is 3-2 in Super Bowls, as in he lost twice. Montana lost no times. Right now, I’m going with Montana. If you disagree with me, I’d love to know your reasoning.

Lowell, you’re wrong. If there has ever been an equal to Montana it is Brady. In fact, in this age of the salary cap I would take Brady over Montana. Blasphemy, I know.

Montana won Super Bowls with his weapons intact. Brady does it with a revolving cast of characters. Montana had Roger Craig. Brady has Danny Woodhead. Montana had Jerry Rice. Brady has Wes Welker. Montana finished his career with a record of 117-47. Brady is currently at 124-35. Montana played in an era where Super Bowls were won 55-10. Brady plays in an era where Super Bowls are won by a field goal. And he’s 2 extraordinary catches away from having 5.

I would take it a step further and say Belichick is equal to Bill Walsh. Again, blasphemy, I know. But not since Bill Walsh has there been a coach so innovative and, quite simply, so fascinating.

I’m a childhood Niners fan. I was 9 when I saw the Niners beat the Giants 44-3 in that divisional game where Ricky Watters had 5 touchdowns. I love what Harbaugh is now doing. But when the Patriots ran out as a team rather than as individuals in that first Super Bowl they won against the Rams, I was hooked. To me, they are the Niners dynasty in present day.

So relish the time we have left to watch Brady because quarterbacks like him and Joe come along, oh, every other decade. You may not think that Brady has eclipsed Montana, but I really think you have to consider him his equal.
