The Santa Rosa Press Democrat just posted my Monday column which is not about Tiger Woods or the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Golf Tournament and Wine Tasting and Weenie Roast. Hey, I was just kidding about the wine tasting and weenie roast, but that tournament does have quite a long name. Anyway, I wrote about Bay Area sports franchises, although I didn’t write about the Sharks. Sorry. I ranked the five top teams from top to bottom in importance according to my highly subjective idea of importance. To read my column, click here.

I won’t read it if you don’t include the Shark’s , thanks anyway, maybe you could of gotten Grant’s opinion on that, to not make this column flawedand incomplete.

Well, how about best group of sports writers? I think the Press Democrat would win. Even though ,I admit, I’ve only read the Cohn family writings, Bob Padecky judging by his photo seems genial enough. He sort of has that Tom Sienstra look…although I don’t think Bob has a pot farm hidden in his back yard. I don’t think..
Next would be the BANG group..Poole,Kawakami and Carl Stewart who’s writings crack me up. Occasional Gary Peterson.. a fine group.
Comcast would be next. I give Griggs big points for integration in sports hosts…but Ted giveth and Ted taketh away with avoiding any controversy of local teams. Comcast never did a single report of the Tony Bruno tweet. And I’m sure you can remember many other controverys that were never even mentioned. That’s going too far.
Last would be the Chron..even though they have the largest sports writing group by far..they are so in bed with local teams everything they write seems team approved. I would grade them a D.
Their beat writers are notorius homers. I would grade them F.
That’s how I see it.

Neal, I rarely cover the Sharks. But you already know that. On another theme, it’s great having you back on the Zohn. I missed you.

With respect to the Raiders and their new head coach Dennis Allen, the Raiders
website says: “In his sole year (2011) coordinating the Denver defense, the Broncos
improved 12 spots over the previous year in overall defensive ranking (from 32nd to 20th)
and bettered their points allowed eight spots (from 32nd to 24th).”
Impressive and true.
…………..
Hue Jackson in his sole year (2010) coordinating the Oakland offense, the Raiders
improved 21 spots over the previous year in overall offensive ranking (from 31st to 10th) and bettered their points production twenty-five spots (from 31st to 6th).
Even more impressive and true.

“The Niners are hands-down the most significant team in the Bay Area, in Northern California, in California.”
I can’t disagree with your list, however, there are WAY more Raider fans in California, as a whole, than 49er fans. So while the 49ers have the Bay Area’s top spot for football right now (although that wasn’t the case for twenty odd years before 81,) I don’t see how you can make that claim for CA as a state.

With all due respect to shark fans, unless you live in the south bay, nobody cares about them. Maybe I’m not in the loop, but I’ve live in the east and north bay, as well as sf, and I honestly never hear anything about the Sharks until post season. I have to side with the Zohn on this one.

Lowell,
I appreciate your comment but the thing is, why don’t you get out of your comfort zone and learn more about the Sharks, your son would be a good start, it is amazing what they are doing each year and Doug Wilson is amazing GM, he is not afraid to pull the trigger unlike Alex Smith.

‘In sports, they call that a losing “culture.” The Warriors are highly cultured.’
.
.
Hilarious!!!
.
Thanks for giving me a great Monday morning laugh Lowell.
.
Also, I’m with ‘Ousted from the Zone’ on this one.
.
Most people don’t give a rip about hockey in general, let alone the Sharks.
.
Shoot…more people talk the W’s than the Sharks and the Sharks actually WIN!

I agree the Niners have more fans than the Raiders in the Bay Area, but in the entire state of California the Raiders have far more fans than the Niners. I would venture to say that there are more Raider fans in Cali than there are Charger and Niner fans put together. Sorry to burst your bubble.
