The entire Cohn Zohn spent the past week in Sayulita Mexico — a great old town. Grant and his girlfriend went ATVing all over the place. Mrs. Cohn Zohn and I walked and ate at nice restaurants and hung around the town square and read a lot and slept. I needed sleep. I read a complete book of Rumpole stories. Do any of you know Rumpole? I’m catching up on sports as I write this. Manny Ramirez???????????

Welcome back, Lowell. It’s always nice to get away for a vacation. As you probably know, Freddie Solomon passed away. I was wondering if you had any memories you could share about him. (I’m assuming you were covering the team when he was there.)

Rumpole on the Bailey? I might be more familiar with the TV and Movie versions of literature then those old fashioned book things.
Hey Lowell, guess who was first in the country, the WORLD, to post of ESPN and its discretions? yep,on the 12th on BASG blog I caught ESPN at its first use of the offensive term. And ESPN admitted it..I was shocked they did. I know local sports stations would have denied, denied ,denied. At least ESPN has some moral compass. They wouldn’t for example, take back anybody who attacked Carib player intellect…

For a birthday present, a long time ago, I took my wife to hear John Mortimer speak at Herbst Theater. He was wonderful and made sure to mention that the San Mateo Rumpole Club had
invited him to lunch earlier, and had served Dodo Mackintosh’s “cheesy bits.”
Try Mortimer’s autobiography “Clinging to the Wreckage.”

‘Rumpole of the Bailey’ was the one show on TV that I could count on putting
me to sleep when PBS Channel 9 aired it 15 years ago. Now, any show can do it.

Lowell, how do the Rumpole stories compare with the BBC-Leo McKern teleplays?

Welcome back. Yes, Manny Ramirez. I hear Mike Schmidt is on Billy Beane’s to-call list as well.

The BBC series was great. The stories are a little different — more internal — but also just great. And what a narrative voice!

I covered Freddie. He was a lovely, somewhat shy man. An underrated wide receiver.

Hahaaaaa Rumpole of the Bailey. My dearly departed father’s favorite program, both men of the three piece suits and the sharp wit! I recall with great joy the late nights in high school and before when dad got his way and the old Rrrrrumpole started bellowing into our living room!

    A bloody good character!

Pops used to read Patrick O’Brian (?) series about seagoing vessels whilst on vacation (Master & Commander was based on these books).

Johnny, I picked up an almost complete set of the O’Brian novels at an estate sale a few weeks ago for .75 per book. Really looking forward to reading them. I hear the “Master and Commander” movie of a few years ago doesn’t do them justice.

Since this is a blog..post some vacation pics. And why Sayulita?..It sounds familiar. My cousin might have vacationed there. Great tasting guavas as I recall he said for one.

Signing Manny Ramirez is just another way of A’s management to give the middle finger to MLB and whats left of their fan base. Trading away their All Stars was another middle finger…… No ballpark, no effort..

    Welcome back…

    I don’t know Rumpole…I should probably remedy that…

Manny Ramirez is completely ridiculous…I got Frank Thomas…I got Hidecki Matsui…they both added gravatas to a club house that had none…

    But Manny?

This is the functional equivalent of the 49er’s bringing in T.O.

Worse really because T.O. never got caught using drugs…

If Mr. Beane is only interested in running a freak show he should just get it over with and sign Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen and the Allstate Guy Dennis Hastert…

My stepson got married there last Feb. So we re-did the experience. Aside from that — a big dinner one night — I mostly read, drank good wine and got some sleep. It was a long 49ers season. The town of Sayulita is a beach town, lots of surfers. But it also has a town square (now being refurbished) that recalls a time long ago. Lovely to sit there and just observe.
