Whenever I cover a Giants home game, as I did Thursday, Marty Lurie comes over from his seat on the radio side of the press box, and sits with me most of the game. This is our tradition.

What do we do?

We talk the game.

We talk through it, analyzing the plays. And we recall baseball past, mostly in Brooklyn. Marty and I are the same age. We grew up in the same section of Brooklyn — he later moved to Miami. And we both loved the Brooklyn Dodgers.

We look alike — kind of like cousins. When I first started at Comcast, several people said to me, “Hi, Marty.”

I liked that.

Marty has the best feel for baseball of anyone I know who was not a player. He used to be a defense attorney and his judgments are balanced and wise about baseball and life.

He has forged a lovely friendship with Willie Mays. He makes Willie laugh and Willie likes to be with Marty.

I love covering baseball. I love covering baseball even more when Marty sits next to me.
