I sign on my computer first thing in the morning. My home page or whatever is AOL — I know I know I’m supposed to do Gmail. Anyway, when I sign on there’s often some news staring me in the face about Justin Bieber, Rihanna and LeAnn Rimes. I have no idea who these people are or why they always are in the news. They must have great publicists. I mean, I know who Marlon Brando was and Paul Newman. I know who John Travolta is and Meryl Streep.

Who are these people? Is my life impoverished because I don’t know and apparently don’t care?

“Is my life impoverished because I don’t know and apparently don’t care?”

    Absolutely not.

Gosh Lowell, I too, know nothing about Bieber or Rihanna other than the controversial stuff and even those things i don’t read…but i know Rimes has been around for a long time…I think back to the people you mentioned like Brando and Newman, but you know, even then in their prime there were known people of 15 second variety…yeah, i forget who they were, but for a few seconds or minutes they were known! Hope that’s the correct answer…hate to think i have become so out dated!!

I could tell you who Bieber and Rimes are, but I never heard of the other one.

Thank goodness I’m not the only one who feels this way.

I know the feeling. I can’t remember the last time I watched the end of The Tonight Show. I have no interest in the music…hippity hop or cowpolk to cool white kid aka, alternative music. Same for SNL….but I did listen to Mick Jagger with the Foo Fighters..and some other group.
I’m all oldies now..Funny,but I was still up to date about two years ago…then lost interest in new stuff. I can’t relate to Adele.

I see the Beach Boys are in Berkeley- you and Grant and familia go?

Grant, who’s probably across the table every morning for breakfast can help you get away from AOL. It’s not painful.

Same with Yahoo- an endless flow of who-gives-a-damn celebrity sludge. I can understand it if the “celebs” have some talent- Adele, mentioned earlier, at least can sing. But Kim K? Come on. Who is that and why is that. My strategy is simply not to care. Apathy is the death knell for the attention starved.

Since when has LeAnn Rimes become relevant again?

Who needs a publicist any more? You couldn’t wlak the streets of LA without someone shoving a camera in your visog, on the off chance hat you may be famous, even if the photographers never heard of you.

Lowell, all you need to know is that they’re all overrated singers. Bieber was discovered by Usher, who was discovered by P.Diddy, who cant sing or dance but is still famous……Rhianna looks great, but cant really sing at all, and got beat up by another famous singer who cant sing named Chris Brown. Le Anne Rhimes sings country pop tunes, so its a total mystery why she’s in the news at all……the entire music industry is a mystery these days

When I was a kid, my parents asked me – “You call that music?”
Well, yeah, that was great music.
I vowed that I would never become antiquated like them and not stay current
with the music of the time.
But I didn’t know that it would become ‘rap music’ and all this other ‘crap music’.
So there was crap music before me, and crap music now.
We are lucky to have lived during the relatively short ‘golden age of music’.

If you have a 20 year old and a 14 year old, how can you not know these people, although I am not sure if my kids know LeAnn Rimes, but I love Country music, so I actually know her best, plus she was in some scandal as she and her now husband were cheating on their spouses, she ended up marrying a actor from CSI Miami, which recently went off the air.

You know you are getting real old if you watch TMZ and don’t know 80% of the people being shown.

    Stan,

Come on now, you can’t relate to Adele, you never had heart break in your life, I actually bought her CD a few months ago, she is wonderful, old soul in a young person.

    Lowell,

Like you and writing, I’ve been involved with the Internet since it was the ARPA net. A short and inaccurate answer to your AOL question is that AOL was never designed to benefit it’s users, and it’s probably never been updated with that in mind either. I haven’t used it since the eighties which I’ll be reaching very soon.

A good parallel would be Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.

Let Grant guide you on this one. His brain is wired differently than ours.
