Friday was an all-time great day for Mrs. Cohn Zohn and me. In the daytime we saw “All the Way,” a play about Lyndon Johnson’s first year in office. It’s by Robert  Schenkkan — in the past he was nominated for a Pulitzer — and this production is the world premiere. Quite a coup for Oregon Shakespeare. Mrs. Cohn Zohn said it was one of the best productions she’s seen anywhere and expects this play to be a smash on Broadway. I agree.

For dinner we went to New Sammy’s Cowboy Bistro, a legendary restaurant up here. The owners have a fascinating history going back to Booneville. You are welcome to research that. This was our second time there and it would be hard to get a better meal anywhere in the Bay Area and I’m including Chez Panisse and Gary Danko. I always let co-owner Vernon select the wine and he always chooses perfectly and the bottle costs less than I’ve offered to pay.

Note to Tommy Quinn: I said hello for you and Vernon was delighted to hear from you. He said you are an all-time interesting person.

I understand from a discussion with a member of the administrative staff at the Utah Shakespeare Festival that having a successful world premier can be very lucrative to theater. The theater earns a percentage of the book office from a subsequent theater’s showing of the play. So if Ms. Cohn is correct and “All The Way” is a smash hit, the OSF is in for a big payday.
