If you were putting together the Giants postseason roster today, would you include Barry Zito who just gave up 7 runs to the Mets?

No, I would not. Tim Lincecum would be the fourth starter.

    Playoff rotation:
    1. Ryan Vogelsong
    2. Madison Bumgarner
    3. Matt Cain
    4. Tim Lincecum

With possibly switching Vogelsong with Lincecum since Lincecum pitches better at home then on road

Yes, and I’d give him a 7-year, $126M contract because I’m a great general manager.

Or Jose, brag at how little you spend to never win the World Series. While still on record as being the 4th richest ownership in baseball.
Hey!..the Browns sold for a Billion in that cruddy city. The A’s are a ton of equity for John Fisher to draw on to get those star players…ahh-but that’s a joke!..Fisher and Wolff aren’t in it for that.

Not a chance. After 5+ years, you start to EXPECT games like today, even after he’s mixed in a few solid starts here and there. Furthermore, he would have NO role on a postseason roster unless he’s your 4th starter (he’s not, still Timmy). He cannot come out of the pen in long relief because he takes too long to get loose.

    no
    off the roster again.
    go with our 4 best.

he is dreadful, interupted by flashes of hope.
very, very frustrating to watch/listen to.

NO — remember that Barry’s history with SF is that he gets even
worse over the last two months…

I would include him on the post season roster for sure but just with the band.

I would, but not as a starter. I would start Cain, Vogelsong, Bumgarner, and Lincecum as my 1-4. Then I would use Zito as the reliever who can go 2-4 innings in case Cain or Lincecum has a short outing. Remember in the NLCS, when Sanchez got knocked out early and Bumgarner and Lincecum both acted in relief? That’s how I’d use Zito. A second starter for when a first starter can’t handle it.

    POSTSEASON???
    .
The G-Men better hope to grab the Wild Card because the Dodgers are winning the West.
    .
Picking up one hot bat won’t be enough to stop them.
    .
The BP that used to be a strength is now a liability.
    .
And just one stud and two reliable starters.
    .
We can’t even beat the Mets for heaven’s sake!
    .
    ugh…
    .
To answer your question though…not in a million years.

Wasn’t today bad enough? I can’t even think WS right now. Our guys have to start hitting.
The Zito question begs the question of our middle relief. Loux didn’t exactly put the fire out. I’m giving him the arsonist award versus a firemen.

    What does it matter?
Bochy has done a great job of juggling a lineup dotted with rookie call-ups, the power positions manned by the powerless and the energy-draining struggles of Timmy and the relievers.
However, the current crisis started when Pablo went down. Panda, who never stretched out at first base before. Ever. Look at he man; I’m amazed he didn’t split in half. Team would be better off if he had just kicked the ball. Bochy probably knew something like this was coming, but what could he do, trot Belt back out there?
Power at the corners, power in the outfield. Where is it?

The Giants need to make it to the post season before we worry about Zito. My guess is that if he pitches like he did yesterday the Giants won’t make it or Zito will be DL’d. In either case Zito won’t be on the roster.

Zito is a theif..He thinks its pride that makes him go out there? Its GREED. He knows he’s a hack,a sure loss,a joke,an embarrassment to the sport. His teammates greed is what bonds them together..that mega contract for his talent level..benefits them.
And I’m tired of Zito making excuses after every loss and feeling like he’s proud of himself.

The other side of that is if the Giants make it it will be because Zito pitched decent enough to contribute and he will be on the post season roster.

Dennis makes an interesting reference. The Giants need Zito to pitch well so we can make the post season

This is actually a tougher question than it seems to be. As others have commented, the Giants need to make the post season for it to even be considered. I would love to see both Bay Area teams make the playoffs, but I still think Arizona will blow by the Giants and Dodgers. I don’t think the Giants will be one of the two wild card teams either – Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Atlanta are better. They do have a relatively easy schedule, but based on this just concluded home stand, no team looks like easy pickings. Imo, their only hope is if Sandoval comes back hitting with a vengeance, which history has proven not to be the case. There are too many holes in their lineup and their bullpen is a shadow of what it was the last two years and continuing to deteriorate before our eyes. Unlike the As, they have nothing in the minors who can help.

So to answer the question, if the current trends continue, I’d be tempted to go with a 3 man rotation, use Lincecum as a spot starter only and leave Zito off the roster, at least for the first playoff series.

Both Zito and Lincecum need to leave the team, cancel their contracts and give them a good multi-million severance pay and kick their butts out the door.

This is Barry Zito’s life…After yesterdays defeat and like all the rest…Zito goes back to his mansion, opens the door, “I’m home!” he says. Then the beauty queen wife greets him with a big hug and asks “How did you do?”…”Oh, I pitched another no hitter hun”..The wife squeals like a 49 er “That’s wonderful, you do that EVERY game!!”..and they both have a great evening.

Sorry to interrupt the latest “Bash Barry Zito Blog” but the Phillies continued to dump salary and passed Joe Blanton through waivers to the Dodgers…

Blanton is well motivated in a contract year…

Just looked at the schedule and the Giants have a tough August followed by an easier September…the Dodgers should cruise through August but have a tougher September…

The next 8 weeks of baseball MIGHT be more interesting than whether Coach Harbaugh is a jerk or if AJ Jenkins is a bust…

Baseball, unfortunately like the NBA, has too many AAA players posing and getting paid as major leaguers.

Pro sports and their owners are in it primarily for the money, and, as a result, expansion yields dollars for the current owners.

Some team will pick up Zito, perhaps the Royals would sign for middle relief, for $500,000 a year.

stop complaining about zito signing for a lot of money. anyone else would have as well. No one would retire or give back the money. No way he’s on post season roster but he actually is ok as fifth starter on this team…just don’t look at the contract and realize..he’s a fifth starter. Would be Colorado ace which is kind of funny
