Tomorrow (Tuesday), Mrs. Cohn Zohn and I go on our annual sojourn to Sea Ranch, my favorite spot on Earth — it’s on the Pacific coast in Sonoma as you approach the Mendocino border. We rent a house and we sleep in and eat great and drink terrific wine and I nap and read and take long walks and talk to myself about the meaning of life and we shop daily in Gualala at the Surf Super and we cook our own dinners and our friends Mike and Cheryl are driving up from Oakland to spend the weekend with us and I play solitaire and we listen to a radio station called the Tide and Grant is holding down the fort in Oakland although I don’t know how one actually holds down a fort.

It’s a great place to vacation. If you are lucky you will see some whales breaching offshore from your vantage point on the cliffs. It helps to have a good pair of binoculars.

The Sea Ranch and Gualala warmly welcome you! (I live in Gualala). Chances are you’re buying groceries from a friend of mine, and if your SR rental has a hot tub, my dad probably fixed it recently.

Enjoy it. It truly is the most beautiful place in the world and I am thankful every single day for it.

Brady, Thanks for the warm welcome. We’ve been bringing our kids there since they were, well, kids. And I’ll probably visit Annapolis Winery because I always do.

It’s a wonderful place to bring your kids. There is some local disdain for the tourists but I find it quite beautiful to see city kids out in the fresh air, running around, building sand castles. I’m glad you were able to get them out here.

And the Annapolis Winery, as you know, is a good call – until a year or two ago, they would get many of their grapes from the Campbell family that lives in Annapolis. Their daughter, Lacey, was a star basketball player and I got my love of the game by watching her play when I was little. Her father, Steve, coached at my high school, and would arrange open gyms in Annapolis that I would go to twice a week; he would stay late and coach me. His wife, Lisa, works at the medical center with my mother, and used to walk down to Trinks, the coffee shop I worked at, to get them lattes. Steve’s father or grandfather used to own the entirety of the Sea Ranch – all ~100 square miles, before there was any development on it.

And that is why I love small towns.

My parents have a place there. We’d visit more often but my wife and daughter get car sick. Windy roads as you know!

Have a great time. I lived on the Mendocino Coast for many years. Watching the fog pick up speed and head inland can be a bracing experience. We used to play at the Gualala Hotel, one of the last great wooden piles on the coast; have a wonderful vacation…

We have loved going to the Sea Ranch since we arrived in California in 1975. Here is a link to a long but interesting oral history with one of the visionaries who created it:

    Hello All,

I’ve lived at The Sea Ranch since 2006, and love it!

Lowell isn’t the only celebrity who can’t resist the charm of The Sea Ranch. FBI Director Robert Mueller vacations here most summers. He’s a real nice fella. While he was here a few years back, he wrote a scathing letter in protest over the release of the Lockerbie bomber. I believe he was a key member of the prosecution team. We all gave him much kudos over that one.

I also recall seeing former 49er play by play announcer Bob Fouts in The Sea Ranch Golf Links pro shop. He was another real nice fella. Speaking of golf, about 3 or 4 years ago I spent a delightful afternoon playing golf with a young guy who turned out to be Andy Baggerly. At that time he was the Giants beat writer for the Mercury News. Of course, 2 weeks ago he was a 3 time winner on Jeopardy. He was damn near as good at Jeopady as he is a sports journalist. He is another real nice fella. The Sea Ranch does that to folks…..

By the way, it’s The Sea Ranch…..”the” is always captilized. We’re not real sensitive about that, so it’s no big deal. And, folks who live here are called “Sea Ranchers.” We’re real proud of this place….

    Enjoy.

If you come to any realization about the meaning of life, please share. I wonder if its related to Grant being able to watch The Godfather even though he is not on vacation? That doesn’t seem fair.
Did I see on Grant’s blog about a big party this weekend?

I go to Sea Ranch every year for a great week with 9-12 of my best buddies. I rent a big house and we have a total blast. We abalone dive, eat like kings, relish the natural beauty, hike and on and on. This trip every May can never come soon enough for us. We all come out of it totally refreshed
