I just returned from dinner with Marty Lurie and Gary Furness, two of my closest friends. We ate at Bocanova in Jack London Square, Oakland and talked baseball nonstop. Gary drove down from Santa Rosa where he’s a doctor. My vacation is almost over and it’s nice to cap it off with drinks and good food with special friends. I’m getting sentimental as I grow older and I feel especially sentimental right now.

I bet you solved all the worlds problems. Good food and better friends. It sounds like a great way to cap off your break.

Did you come up with a solution to the PED’s problem?

Lowell, Isn’t every day like vacation for you? I know it’s work, but you have quite the dream job.

Jack Hammer, You raise a great question. I do have a dream job and now that I’m an old guy — well, not that old — I realize how precious it is. But writing columns is not a vacation for a few reasons. For starters, I write four columns a week. That’s a lot. At the Chron, they write three. I love writing four, but it means coming up with four good ideas a week I can develop into full columns. That involves lots of work, and coming up with ideas is hard. Believe me. Ostler and I both say the hardest part of our job is getting the idea in the first place. Having said all that, yes, this job is fantastic. I write about sports, people read me, and the paper pays me.

ideas:
Warriors bball this year, they might possibly be good.
Pennant race: no brainer, nice the A’s are sticking around this late in the year.
Petaluma closing in on the world series, that’s good stuff right there.
Niners / Raiders- always good for ratings. Can Alex progress from last year? Will JH beat up Lowell Cohn at a press conference.
US Open
Roger Federer- not going gently into the the night…resurgence
have a good rest of your vacation Mr. Cohn
