As preparation for coming off vacation, I’ve been reading transcripts from 49ers coaches. Recently, Greg Roman talked about that second and 7 play against the Texans where Alex Smith threw to Vernon Davis — it was incomplete — even though Randy Moss was streaking downfield, apparently open. Roman said Smith made the right read. Maybe he made the right read because Davis was the first option. But it still was the wrong read. Please allow me to explain. This is preseason. In preseason you practice stuff. Smith needs to practice hitting Moss deep. Deep is what was missing from the Niners’ offense last season. Deep is what they signed Moss for. They didn’t bring in Moss to be a decoy. That’s the whole point even if he was the so-called second read on that play. If Jerry Rice was open deep, I can’t imagine Steve Young saying “I didn’t throw to him because he was my second read.” Please.
