First off, all credit to the A’s for doing so well. I never saw this coming and apologize to the world at large for belittling them early in the season. I promise to wear a hair shirt through the World Series.

Having said that, I must admit I have been assigned the Giants in the postseason. Bob Padecky will cover the A’s. Got that?

Which brings me to Giants pitching. Here’s how I rate their starters at this moment: Cain, Bumgarner, Zito, Lincecum, Vogelsong.

I could be way off base. How do you rate them? Which guy do you put in the bullpen?

I would go Cain, Bumgarner, Lincecum, Zito, Vogelsong.

Vogelsong could still be good but right now he reminds me too much of Jonathon Sanchez: wearing down down the stretch, and prone to let his emotions better him. I still trust him, however. I’m putting Timmy ahead of Barry just because I think his performance under pressure is proven. I expect him to pitch well.

However, Cain’s the only sure thing. The Giants need at least 2 of the other 4 to be at their sharpest.

I would not put Bumgarner ahead of Vogelsong or Zito. Zito..I know what his resurgence comes from..and its working great. So…Cain,Zito(winning talks) Vogelsong,Bumgarner, Timmy and no Lassie.
Comcast-you might have seen it,played a tape of a writer saying the A’s wouldn’t have more then 72 wins back in April. That was was so cold..just set the guy up for taking the fall of everybody-ha.

As sad as it is to say, I would trust Vogelsong over Lincecum. Vogelsong was throwing great stuff until 2 days before Melky’s PED discovery, then he’s been so-so. (Coincidence I hope)
Timmy’s just been plain ole hittable.

Cain, Zito, Lincecum, Bumgarner with Vogelsong in the “alert 5 aircraft” in case Zito or Lincecum have one of their second time through the lineup collapses.

Depends on who they play. If it’s Washington, I’d go Cain, Vogelsong, Zito, Bumgarner and Cain because the Nats have a mostly right-handed hitting lineup. Washington’s ballpark is not a bandbox, so the lefty/righty issue is somewhat mitigated. If it’s Cincinnati, I’d go Cain, Zito, Bumgarner, Vogelsong or Lincecum and Cain. The Reds also have a primarily right-handed lineup, but a pop fly in that park could easily become a home run. I don’t have any faith in Lincecum; he’s been bad to mediocre all season and much of last – two seasons removed from being good. But it sounds like he’s in the rotation.

Speaking of the A’s, who would have ever predicted at the beginning of the season that Zito would be on anyones post season rotation let alone ahead of Timmy.

I seem to recall a post here asking if Zito would be in the rotation if the Giants made it to the post season and I said that the Giants wouldn’t make it to the post season if Zito didn’t pitch well remainder of the season. My how things do change.

I’m with you Lowell; Cain, Bum, Zito, Lincecum & the Vol, in that order. Zito’s coming on strong right now and and he’s got great veteran experience. I’m not going to be surprised when Lincecum come’s through in the clutch, watch him be the best of the bunch! If Bochy needs to drop one and of course the choice would be between Zitosong and the Vogelsong. Zito sings with Train and he’s a better guitar player!

My ranking is Cain, Bumgarner, Lincecum, Vogelsong and Zito. Just can’t buy into Barry’s comeback vs creampuffs down the stretch (and I had Zito on my fantasy team in 2002 when he won the Cy Young, so I’m not an automatic disparager.)

Not sure what’s happening with Vogelsong of late, but I smell a bit of an Eckersley attitude in him. He might respond to the challenge of being a long-inning reliever or spot starter in the playoffs if asked. (Lincecum might do the same, pitch with fire.) Barry would dissolve if asked to go out of his rhythm, not that his rhythm would win many grammys these days.

I like Barry as a person but I like a lot of people that I wouldn’t put on the mound in a playoff game, or give a $130m contract to.

Lowell, I had no idea Glenn Dickey’s home was damaged in the 1991 fire. Glad that Ira missed the worst of it.

    Well, what do we know?
    1) Cain is #1.
    2) Bumgarner is #2 and their best Leftie. Plus, he just shut out the Reds in June.
    3) Zito has looked good but he can’t be a reliever so he starts.
    4) Vogelsong was awesome before the break–not-so after.
    5) Timmy struggled all year but that slider can be the death of right-handed hitters if he’s on come the Playoffs.
I rate them: Cain, Bumgarner, Zito, Vogelsong, Lincecum.
I play them: Cain, Bumgarner, Lincecum, Zito, Vogelsong, as needed.

I don’t know how I can hold up with this avalanche of winning from Alex Smith,Zito, and the Beane man. I guess to think positive..if I hadn’t bit -and bit hard, they wouldn’t changed.
    How I see it.

If anyone is interested, here is one of the reasons that you are wearing a hair shirt:

In the blog part of that column:

you asked “…Please write three positive things about the A’s.”

I was only 1 for 3, but boy those $2 BART games were fun…especially today.
