Here is the opening to my Thursday column about Tim Lincecum, who will pitch Game 4 of the NLCS:

ST. LOUIS — Forget Game 3 of the NLCS, that drawn-out, drenched affair. Just know the Giants lost 3-1 and left a million men on base — 11, actually — and now they are down 2-1 in games and they will pitch Ryan Vogelsong in Game 6 and Matt Cain in Game 7, if there is a Game 6 and a Game 7.

The issue is Game 4, the most frightening game in this series from the Giants’ point of view. The issue is Tim Lincecum. After Wednesday’s game, Bruce Bochy said he will start Lincecum in Game 4 tonight.

“He’s the guy we want out there, and he’s been throwing the ball well,” Bochy said. “We’ve got to bounce back. It’s great to have a guy like Timmy all set to go.”

It’s the right move. Experience is big in post season and he’s our most accomplished pitcher. Zito has the track record to go in game 5. His season, and career, make this the right move as well. If we go down, we go down with our best, most experienced guys. I won’t second guess either choice.

    Well, probably……

The Giants look badly overmatched: their starting pitching has been spotty at best since mid-September, they have very little power, and they don’t hit for much of an average (even Posey is struggling in the post-season). Their 3rd baseman is embarrassingly fat, while the bottom half of their line up is hitting around the Mendoza line. The sad part is this team could have competed with anyone if the owners had been willing to pay for more talent at the plate.

So tell us again, Mr. Sabean, why didn’t you sign Carlos Beltran after giving up your top pitching prospect to get him?

Lowell, you need to nail them on this point: the Giants are a big market team, with hundreds of millions of dollars coming in from various streams of revenue, yet the men running (and owning) the show constantly poor-mouth. Explain to the fans why Detroit & St. Louis can buy hitters and pitchers, but the Giants can’t? Detroit!?

The Giants need to get hits. I hope Pence steps up tonight despite going up against another big right hander. Or it may be time to give him a break as well and put Posey in left with Blanco in right. If there was a time for Huff to snap out of it, it’s today…

Lincecum is the obvious choice because he’s the ONLY choice.
    And no…Zito isn’t a choice.

St Louis hasn’t looked better the the Giants..they just haven’t been as bad.
Lesser minds put it all on Pence..but who’s stopping the rest of the lineup from murdering the ball?

And Pablo’s fat boy swing is comical..just a wonder the helmet doesn’t fall over his eyes..like in every baseball comedy bit.

Even his monster HR..didn’t look right..he clubbed it,not smooth stroked it. Its hard to swing around that big belly.

I’ve been a big proponent of Lincecum out of the pen for the playoffs, but this is the right move, as is Zito in game 5 (on a very short leash) regardless of tonight’s result. I still say the home plate umpire was a major contributing factor – Zito got squeezed on at least three strike 3s that ultimately resulted in walks. Anyway, no more Bumgarner as a starter, either drop Pence in the lineup or sit him, put Nady in left and move Blanco to right. I don’t have a problem moving Posey to first and Sanchez catching and hitting fifth or sixth – Belt hasn’t exactly looked too good at the plate. I’m not totally against putting Arias at third for a game and sitting fatso Sandoval – improved defense and better at-bats. At the very least hit Posey third. Bottom line: just win baby.

tonights game is a must win for the Giants. Cardinals will finish them off on Friday if Timmy doesn’t win in game 4. Wainwright looked terrible in his last start vs. the Nats so the Giants better put up some runs because you dont know what Lincecum is going to do based on his inconsistant year.

I don’t know who is the ‘lesser mind’ is that you think is putting it all on Pence, but the fact is he’s just not coming through at the plate right now, period.
    Even HE admits it.
His big belly not withstanding, at least Panda is hitting SOMETHING out there.
Leave it to you to criticize a home run.
