I’ve been on the road almost two weeks, in and out, and I’ve been eating like a pig and drinking more wine than I should. A bunch of us usually go out after we’re done writing, find a late night joint and have a meal like 1:00 a.m. I asked Mark Purdy why we do this and I like his answer. “It’s our particular pathology,” he told me.

When I asked him to elaborate, he said our day has a buildup with the game and the writing and then we need a cool off — the late night eating and talking. And then we do the whole thing all over again the next day.

But last night I didn’t do the cool off. My friend Barry Bloom from mlb.com told me I should lay off the gluttony. He was right of course. So I skipped the late meal and went back to the hotel like a good boy. About three in the morning I realized I was starving as I hadn’t eaten since about 5 pm. I went back to sleep and had eating dreams. Early in the morning I went to Starbucks in my hotel and bought a blueberry muffin and devoured it and then slept like a baby until noon.

Tonight I go with Purdy and the others for the cool down. No more starvation eating dreams for me.

Better send a note to Mrs. Cohn Zohn and ask her to dust off the exercise bike…

Sounds like you’re going to need it more than ever…

No matter the time of day, “pigging out” is the road to ruin. You can “over eat” as long as the meals are spread out and balanced.
Your dietary routine is similar to the early morning people who skip breakfast- not good.
Allow me to recommend one easy improvement; pack a meal to eat while you’re working late.
After you’re used to that, work on de-emphasizing the fat, sugar and starches in your meals.
Mrs. Cohn Zone will worry much less about Mr. Cohn Zone.
    Be well.

Lowell, I really related to the “Particular pathology” diagnosis. Like musicians going to Denny’s at 3 a.m. after a gig we’re share the same particular pathology.
