I’ve been writing baseball through the entire playoffs — it’s a delight. But I notice one thing. My hits on the Cohn Zohn are down. If I were writing Niners now my hits would be up. It seems inconceivable to me but apparently Zohn readers are more motivated to read about the Niners in the regular season than the Giants in the postseason. Can you explain this phenomenon to me?

Uhh… football is way more popular than baseball in America?

Maybe because you kept burying them? In stores and on the streets Giants fever is quite high.

People who love to hate you..wait for you to bring up Harbaugh..then multiply that by the fact the 49ers are bay area kings of all media. The Raiders won yesterday and haven’t been mentioned by KNBR from what I heard.
Anything SF is popular. Go figure the 49ers will soon be the Santa Clara 49ers. Right?

lameduck, I buried them only once. Maybe it seems like I buried them more than once.

Perhaps the number of random Giants articles out there increase during the postseason?
Personally I do less reading of the games that I watch, than of the ones that I miss.
Just my $0.02

maybe baseball fans do not read as much
as “hard nosed, down hill running, smash mouth,
lunch pail, motors always running” football fans?

It is because you are typically wrong in what you write about the 49ers. And most of us feel compelled to correct you.

Dennis, And I always appreciate it when you correct me.

I am saddened that it seems folks just are not as interested in baseball–even with a potential world series lurking as they are in mid-season football. Also – I use twitter to get the news feeds I want. I know you are on twitter but don’t tweet much. I wonder if you might get more traffic if you tweet more? Just a thought.

have to agree that football is more popular than baseball. Even the Giants amazing post season run is no comparison to Lowell asking Harbaugh how his pinky finger is feeliing…..lol!! it’s just a California thing

Heck, even those who agree AND like you, wait with baited(pizza?) breath to read what you say about Harbaugh.

Hey I tried. I mistook brink for burying. This morphine makes it a bit tough to concentrate. My next guess is that because baseball is everyday, fans are getting what they need from TV and the radio. A post is already old news.
If I were at work, I’d have the radio on.

Your Niner articles are typically more controversy-stirring. Taking Harbaugh or Smith to task, or criticizing Baalke and the rookies. Lots of stuff that fans find to be either controversial, unnecessary, or wrong.
Your Giants articles are much more positive, the only criticism (early playoff struggles, and Lincecum), has been incontrovertibly true.
I certainly don’t question your objectivity, but I think, on the whole, your Giants articles read as more subjective because they are more straightforward, and more in line with what we all see on the TV. Your Niners posts often try to extrapolate or draw a conclusion that the rest of us don’t see, which is wonderful at times, but also rubs us the wrong way sometimes, and almost always generates discussion.

Oops, I meant to say “your Giants articles read as more OBjective,” not SUBjective.

Peter, I can’t bring myself to tweet. I don’t consider it writing. And I get lots of traffic on the Zohn

Gee, lameduck, I hope you’re feeling well. The Zohn needs you.

You already know the answer to that. But it is a shame as there is nothing more exquisite than a game 7 between two very fine teams in an LCS. Getting ready to duck out of here a bit early to get a good spot with a Guiness in front of me.
Go Giants.

I think it’s just a matter of logistics. With the Niners, they play once a week, and you have time to allow comments to get posted and for a conversation to build within a particular post. And time to have several conversations between games
With the Giants playoffs, you’ve been traveling and they play every day or every few days, and so comments aren’t posted for a long, long while–you’re busy watching the game or filing your story. So there is no conversation going, and by the time you permit all the posts on (and delete the others), the baseball world has moved on. And so have readers
I think interest in the Giants is at a fever pitch right now, at least in my world.

Lowell I’ve been reading you since I was 14 and you were writing columns about Jeffrey Leonard in the Chron. Now I’m nearly 40 and a journalism professor. Baseball is my sport. But I’m more interested in reading your football reporting because you seem more interested in — more compelled by — football. True?

Baseball’s becoming a tougher and tougher sport to cover by mainstream outlets, given the surge of baseball blogs which can provide enough poorly-paid writers to give daily coverage of almost every baseball team, analysis as well as commentary. Also, many of these blogs are positively obsessed with sabremetrics, which seems to be quite in vogue among young fans since the success of “Moneyball.”

I have two brothers. When we grew up, my oldest brother was a basketball guy. Loved the Lakers. He is 6′ 5 and also played Basketball for HS.
My middle brother loves baseball. He can recite Ted Williams’ batting average in any year.
I like all of the national sports, including soccer and track, but Football is my favorite sport.
That’s the way it is sometimes.

I wish you didn’y curse the A’s to an early exit! Also, I highly doubt the Giants will beat the Tigers.

Jacob, I don’t feel more compelled by football. But I will think about what you wrote. Thanks.

No A’s talk was announced at the start of the run, so I’ve been avoiding the sight. No offense, Lowell.

Capts, I haven’t written A’s because I was assigned to the Giants by my editors. I have no bias against the A’s. I live in Oakland.

Hello Lowell,
I’ve been captivated by the Giants’ play in the playoffs and now, I’m watching them in the World Series. This means I’m spending hours before the TV.
That takes me away from being online, reading your blog.
