Here is the opening to my Sunday column about Colin Kaepernick:

I’m going to make two assumptions. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb by any means, but I am making assumptions.

TODAY’S GAME

NFL Week 12

49ers (7-2-1) at Saints (5-5)

Time: 1:25 p.m.
TV: Fox Ch. 2
Radio: 680 AM

Assumption No. 1: Colin Kaepernick will start today’s game at quarterback against the Saints.

I make this assumption even though at his Friday media session, Jim Harbaugh was mum on the subject. “Again, it’s just not something we think is an advantage for us to talk about,” he said when asked who will start the game. “And you may have your opinions on it. It’s unorthodox. So be it. You can call me names if you want, or make sport of me. But, that’s the way we’re going to go about it.”

I just picked up Kaepernick in my fantasy league. The reports are that Kaep is starting, as communicated by Alex Smith. I wonder if there is a bounty on him today? And who placed it on him? Other QB’s out with concussions Vick, for eg. Vick isn’t playing but he was struggling before he went out. The other QB is Cutler who it feels like he is being rushed back especially after the Bears MNF performance.

My gut says to not mess around with concussions so the extra week is good and waiting until Alex can practice with contact before putting him in a game is wise from a health perspective. If it was an injury we could see, like a foot or shoulder were he was wearing a cast, we wouldn’t be second guessing the motive of the QB decision.

The Saints will be a great test for CK today for a lot of reasons. I hope he comes out of the game healthy.

Now that the game is over and won, it can be said that Kaepernick played very well. There were a number of drops..including one right in the chest of Vernon Davis and a lot of plays called back due to holding. Special teams stunk..a dropped punt on the ten yard line, a missed field goal and a blocked field goal.
The one big mistake KC made was the interception preceded by a low snap which hurried KC into throwing without seeing the coverage adequately. That was redeemed three plays later by the game changing Brooks int and touchdown. Nice!

“call me names if you want…” sounds like a little kid! I like that raw “kid” ness about Harbaugh. “tea and crumpets” old sport! ha ha ha! Or I can see him in an English pub eating his steak and kidney pie, drinking a guinness stout and being his usual squirrely self with the media!!
