Okay, I'll be the devil's advocate here. Maybe, just MAYBE the 49ers are not as great as we all thought they'd be.

Nancy R, We live on the side of a hill, so there's plenty of wild stuff and bottle brush by the ton. Mrs. Cohn Zohn has a lovely herb garden.

It appears to me that Greg Roman has serious difficulty scheming against 4-3 teams.

Greg Roman should never have made that ultra stupid call that ended up losing a game they should have easily won. That being said, we still don't have an answer to the key question:why didn't Harbaugh veto the play immediately? Saying he was taking responsibility for it is meaningless unless he follows it with a resignation or with changing his OC.

Lowell Cohn, ever so nice to hear from you again. I lost you somehow since the days of The Sporting Green.

Also nice to hear about your take on 49er OC Roman. They may as well wait until the off season, for continuity's sake, if nothing else. The coaching fraternity accepts all, winners and losers (statistically that's about 50-50), as brothers. Indeed, when a losing coach, a real loser, changes jobs and becomes a real winner, those losses are looked on as "the learning process."

But you witnessed the Walsh era. He lost a lot of games, especially early. He made the most of being unpredictable. The 49ers are conservative and predictable.

Field position is important, obviously, but it's more of a bi-product than a cause of play selection. Usually it's points that win the game.

Roman probably isn't the best OC, but thats not the Santa Clara 49ers main problem. Until they get a veteran proven QB, they wont win a Super Bowl or even get there. Just think where'd they be if they had gotten Peyton Manning. Even with a Carson Palmer they'd be Super Bowl bound....sure Palmer throws some mysterious interceptions, but thats with a terrible offensive line and no running game. Put him on Santa Clara's team and he doesn't make those mistakes.

Harry Truman had it on his desk: “The buck stops here.” That should be writ large on the wall in the Harbaugh office.

Harbaugh and his crew have been outcoached in recent games. Largely the other teams have figured out how to defend the 49ers, and how to beat the Niners’ superior defense. Harbaugh hired all those assistant coaches and he has final say in what they propose.

This is nowhere more evident than in his dogged determination that Kapernick should start the next game. That crummy play where the Rams scored should not have been called by Roman and should not have been approved by Harbaugh. Further, you can be sure Alex Smith would not have lateraled the ball as badly as did Kapernick. There was the signal that Kapernick is not yet equal to being an NFL quarterback. Harbaugh needs to sallow his excessive self pride and get back to Smith.
