Here is the opening to my Sunday profile of David Shaw:

STANFORD

Willie Shaw likes to tell this story about his son David, who just happens to be Stanford’s football coach, whose team just happens to be playing in Tuesday’s Rose Bowl against Wisconsin.

David, a Stanford graduate, asked his future wife Kori to marry him in front of Memorial Church on the Stanford campus. She said yes. He said they would have to wait before taking their vows. She asked why. He said there was a year’s waiting list for Memorial Church. She agreed to wait.

Yeah, but Shaw like Harbaugh and some of Mark Jackson..they don’t handle the criticism very well. Shaw after blowing the Fiesta bowl was stoned face months later and still said “He would go for the FG again”..sure,and Harbaugh wasn’t interested in Manning.
Right now only Bochy has held up to bad times and good times pretty much the same.
Keep winning is my advice for many local thin skinned and worse, coaches.

    Dear Lowell,

Long time since I’ve commented. I’ve read all your blog posts and articles in the intervening time.

I must say this column is one of the best, I’ve read, ever. Really. And, I’ve been reading you since you first started at the Chronicle. I could comment more on it, but I’ll take it in, for now, my time is limited.

Honestly, being a guy who went to Cal, I wasn’t sure about reading it. I’m glad I did. Thank you, for your storytelling abilities. And, because I’m persistent, with a long memory, I’ve detected a change in your writing. Really.

What you wrote inspiring, and here’s the subtle dig—there was no use of sarcasm. The content was more uplifting, as a result.

    A grateful reader.

On further thought, remember when the disciples of Walsh or Al Davis went out and shared that personality?
The disciples of Harbaugh…like CK and Shaw and others..have that distrust ego that makes people uncomfortable..notice?..hee.

Stan, David Shaw’s personality is much different from Jim Harbaugh’s.
