Here is the opening to my Friday column:

Who are the five best professional athletes in the Bay Area?

It is a hypothetical question attached to an arbitrary number, and it’s certainly fun to ponder over a morning cup of Joe. So here goes:

The best athlete of the people who play pro sports around here is Colin Kaepernick. Can anyone dispute this? He has an athlete’s body. You might say a God-given body. With his shirt off, he looks like a tight end or the heavyweight champion of the world.

    Nice list.

I was very disappointed Allen didn’t start playing Pryor as soon as they were out of the playoffs. Instead, they wait until Palmer breaks a rib or two.

The problem with Pryor is that he’s in the dark ages compared to Kaepernick as far as throwing the football. He’s shown his athletism, but can he improve his throwing?

Funny, Kaepernick from little Reno is starting the Super Bowl, and Big 10 Pryor is playing behind Matt Leinart.

Fascinating column. I agree with Kaepernick, Posey and Barnes, but add Patrick Marleau and Andre Ward. Marleau has sometimes been criticized for being “soft” but he’s a blur on skates and a creative genius with a hockey stick. Being the boxing afficionado that you are, I’m surprised you didn’t include Ward. Fast, strong and technically brilliant, I hope his shoulder surgery doesn’t impact his remarkable career. My Honorable Mentions are Cespedes, Stephen Curry, Joe Thornton, Brandon Crawford (slight edge over Marco Scutaro) and Russell Baze, who at 54 is still riding in top form guiding 1,000 pound horses around the track at 35-40 mph. The guy is an amazing athlete and a true gentleman.

I would absolutely love to see pryor playing in that offense. what is the worst thing that could happen? The Raiders lose?

    What about McFadden? Too fragile?

    Steve the cat rescuer,

LC might not know who Patrick Marleau is, I actually spoke with Marleau last night among other Sharks players at season ticket holders had fan appreciation night. Had a great time

I believe you Lowell, Marleau is a hell of a skater, very fast, he just does not show up in crunch time, although lately he has been very aggresive around the net.

No alternate sports figures listed? How about Jeff Gordon? Do we have any boxing or MMA greats? Andre Ward? How about that surfer Flea?
