Here is the opening to my Thursday column about the possibility of Mike Holmgren taking over the Raiders:

A while back, Mike Holmgren was a great football man, Super Bowl winner and heir to the Bill Walsh legacy, perhaps Walsh’s most distinguished heir.

He no longer is a great football man, hasn’t been in a long time. His decline is relevant around these parts. Reports say he’s a candidate to run the Raiders. If he gets the gig, that would be unfortunate.

Understand, I have nothing against Mike Holmgren. I knew him when he coached for the 49ers and I’ve known him after, and he’s a nice man. But he’s all wrong for the rebuilding Raiders.

What about Bucher/Townsend chatter today re: Holmgren connection to Steve Young/Brent Jones investing in Raiders with Mark Davis potentially needing infusion of cash due to inheritance tax Mark will get saddled with?

Current odds have Jacksonville as the least likely team to win the 2014
    Super Bowl at 150/1.

Oakland & Buffalo are tied as the next least likely at 100/1.

Oakland is favored to be last in the AFC West this season.

I think having Holmgren around makes the team more interesting.
Can they pay him enough to get him here?

“…and the walrus is Paul….”, no, seriously, Davis should bring in new energy and not re-treads that are a little tired and done….as for the current coach, at the bye week, as you had mentioned,if the Raiders do not show improvement they should make moves to show their true intentions….nice writing on Holmgren and i do wish him well but he should move on to something else now.

I have always thought that Holmgren was over rated, which probably guarantees he will end up in Oakland.

As President of “The Real Sons of Al Davis”..I say Mark now knows he went astray getting away from vertical,WC,and exciting football..to pass only in desperation, defensive football, and what you get with putting defensive guys in charge.
Yeah,Palmer threw 60 times a game..and it was always after the Raiders spotted the other team a 2 touchdown lead with a conservative start.

Mark Davis is in way over his head…and while estate taxes shouldn’t be a big issue until his mother passes it’s clearly time to sell…

The Raiders need somebody with some money to come in here…make a deal with Jed to share the stadium…and get back to competing in the NFL…

The move to tarp off Mt. Davis looks like a clear sign of surrender to me…

Informative piece. I have a lot of respect for this guy and I think he should be praised as a good offensive football mind who understands QB play in the NFL. But your analysis, especially over recent events as a big picture guy, is persuasive.

    I think Lowell is nuts!
    .
Holmgren would be the best thing to happen to this disfunctional franchise in YEARS!
    .
Two guys would be better…Gruden or Cowher.
    .
    Neither will come to Oakland.

Perhaps Holmgren is better qualified to be Pope? Maybe bring in the Emeritus Pope to the Raiders.

    Happy Friday!

seems like you’re saying Holmgren is like Don Nelson in 1988…..joining the team as GM and then back stabbing the Allen like Nelson did George Karl to become the head coach……I basically agree that Holmgren would be a bad choice. the only positives are that he’s been a GM and head coach and he could mentor both Reggie and Allen. But why Mark Davis hired two guys at the most important positions of GM and head coach that need mentoring is ridiculous…..shows Mark Davis need mentoring in being an owner which is basically impossible…….yikes, Oakland Raiders shoulduv retired their name and uniforms when Al passed away and created a new name in Oakland the way things are going.

I think holmgren would be good for the Raiders.

They need a McVey type to plot a course through the turbulent waters of the personnel quagmire they find themselves in.
