Here is the opening to my Thursday column about Tim Lincecum:
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. … kind of – Please notice the dateline on this column. It says Scottsdale, Ariz. kind of. I’ve been back from Arizona a week now but the scene I’m writing about took place outside the Giants’ clubhouse in Scottsdale Stadium, so I included the dateline even though I’ve been home and writing about the World Baseball Classic with a San Francisco dateline. I didn’t want you to think I’ve been fudging. Or I can be two places at once. Or I’m bonkers.
Now, to the matter at hand. Call it Lowell’s loopy theory of the day. I got it into my head that Tim Lincecum needs to refer to himself as Tim — or think of himself as Tim — as opposed to Timmy. If he thinks he’s Timmy, he’s thinking like a boy, Timmy being a boy’s name — and he won’t stand up like a man to the challenges of the upcoming season. And there will be challenges.
As I say, loopy theory.

Like I said, his answers to the media have more thought behind them. He’s not the typical blow off everything jock with a crude remark or attitude. And he sure doesn’t treat everything like its a joke.
Dad? I’ve said that for years….
But,He’s a Giant. And that means his struggles? He might suddenly recover his early skills. They,uh, have a way to get maximum performance out of their aging athletes.

That’s just about everything you’d want to read in a Sports Section! Who cares what his family or friends call him!! Maybe a story about how he’s feeling this year. Or maybe his future with the Giants. Why the hell couldn’t we find out what kind of wine he drinks??Just another waste of print in the P.D!! Cohn-Did you ever thing about the living an Wine section that the Press has!! Leave the sports writing to the sports writers!

Tim or Timmy, I am skeptical about him starting.

Oh come on Lowell! As a Giant fan, I call him Timmy as an indication of affection. We loves our Timmy!

Nobody’s named Willie any more in sports. What a great name that was for decades. Everybody is Brandon,or Tyrell now or variations of…

I’m with glenellen. And I’m skeptical about Romo as a season long closer, too. In his current state, Timothy is a perfect closer. It worked for Eck, it worked for Schmoltz, hell, it worked for Rags. I wonder if his agent is controlling how Tim is being used? Or his tiresome father?

Timmy can either still pitch or he can’t and we’ll all know that by the end of May…
Personally though…I’d have paid to stand there and listen to you say “Go soak my head” in a cruder vein…
I’m happy to hear you still have it in you…

Lowell, there is a simple reason for this and I have been guilty of it in the past myself. When you can’t think of how to spell his last name you just call him “Timmy” because you see him called that in your column so the name just perpetuates itself because of that.

Lowell I wish you wrote for Grantland so we could read you in your garbage mouth glory.

Cogratulatons Lowell..you survived a dose of Hunter Pence eyes from Mark Kreidler on Comcast. One eye beat per minute can freak a honest man out.
Did he,uh,mention reading anything?

Not to change the subject, but I see where the judge is going to back the 49ers in the $30 mil lawsuit. This is as it should be. Finally, someone in California who actually believes that there is such a thing as contract law.

Funny, I’ve wondered this myself. He had such success as a kid with relative ease, and now it seems he must grow up a bit to adjust to who he is today and be successful with what he has left. So I equate Tim (and his new haircut) with the man he needs to become to do this. Perhaps he is above all of that and that’s a good sign. Perhaps his fastball location is more important after all.

I was listening to early Saturday Beatles on the radio. Was there ever a more powerful song then “As my guitar gently weeps” ?. It reminded me your Beatles vs Stones..and George and Clapton pretty much reached a higher level on that song.
One for the Liverpool Gods.

Stan, I love that song. As I recall it was a George Harrison composition. Am I right?

Also Lowell,it might sound laughable or I’m joking…but I’m not when I say on YouTube their is a Hawaiian ukulele version of that song.
What nice rendition it is.

The song was written by George Harrison, but Eric Clapton came into the studio and did the lead guitar on it because it was more than George was capable of. I am not sure if you have seen this on YouTube but during the Concert for George, Clapton does one of the greatest lead guitar versions of the song I have ever heard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rj4J6i_vw0w. The young guy who looks like George in video is George’s son Danny.

Dennis, Thanks for the link. Clapton was just great and he made his guitar weep.
