During his Friday give and take with the media, 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman said Colin Kaepernick is “ascending” as a quarterback. One reporter followed up on the ascending remark and Roman responded:

How specifically is Kaepernick ascending because it seems like he’s in a slump?

“Really understanding the game, understanding of his job. Again, these things aren’t reflected this week or certainly as we stand here right now this week. But as far as his development as a quarterback, this is incredibly valuable for him to go through these types of situations, battle his way out and learn from them because to play quarterback in this league it is a tall task. Over time there are so many different things you’ll encounter, so many different players you’ll play with, all those different things that contribute to your growth as a quarterback. Your recognition skills, understanding where the weaknesses in defenses are, how guys matchup, protection schemes, run schemes, all the different things on his plate and that’s just part of a quarterback’s development. So, this is a very opportunistic time for him to learn and get better from it.”

What Roman said is pure baloney. You know that. He was filling up time with hot air and meaningless words. It’s something he routinely does. One thing he said really got me — “This is incredibly valuable for him (Kaepernick) to go through these types of situations.”

Really?

It’s valuable to lose two games in a row? It’s valuable to be totally lost on the field? It’s valuable not to know how many time outs you have? It’s valuable to regress in your game? Because, make no mistake, Kaepernick is regressing.

This is not a get-Kaepernick post. It’s a post wondering what in the world goes on with Roman. He is almost never candid. Even Jim Harbaugh, the keeper of all secrets, is more open than Roman. Certainly defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, a better coordinator than Roman, is more open and honest, and is not afraid to be open and honest.

But Roman is always deflecting you, always acting as if you’re stupid and can’t see reality  for what it is. I don’t believe anything that happened in the past two games is good for Kaepernick. I don’t believe Roman believes that. Once, I would like to hear him say something forthright. Bruce Bochy — the guy won two world championships — faulted his own managing at the end of last season and he honestly admits his team does not hit enough.

Why can’t Roman admit the most obvious things? He doesn’t even have to do that. But please don’t say Kaepernick is ascending when he seems to be descending. Don’t play us for fools. Roman sounds like a character in “1984.” He sounds like someone delivering propaganda.
