Went to the post office today, the Montclair Branch in the Oakland Hills. Asked the postal clerk for 100 forever stamps.

“We don’t have any,” she said.

“Say what?”

“We don’t have any.”

“I’ve never heard of a post office not having stamps.”

“I know,” she said, “but we don’t have any.”

“They haven’t come in.”

“Is it just you or is it all post offices?”

“Just us.”

Well, that’s a relief

The post office has been under attack since at least the 80s. Republicans have wanted to sell it off to private interests since then.

In 2006 Congress passed a bill requiring the post office to pay for employees’ healthcare 75 years in advance. That is, the USPS has to pay for future healthcare for employees who haven’t even been born yet. Remember how last year the post office was so broke they tried to cancel Saturday delivery? This year Congress is trying to get money out of the postal service to pay for road repairs.

This is what happens when people who don’t believe in government run a government agency. They run it into the ground and then privatize it.

Don’t believe me? Look it up.

Lowell: When you eventually acquire those 100 stamps how long will they last you?

Just be thankful you don’t need to use the VA. No stamps would be the least of your problems.

Elknarps, The stamps will last maybe two, three months.

Not all VA’s are the same, yes there are many that suck, but the VA in Palo Alto is very good. My wife was a medic in Desert Storm, and she is getting excellent care there, also in Menlo Park and San Jose. Also same day appointments are available in most situations if needed.

Thanks for becoming a Timmy fan Lowell….even if his 2 no-hitters were against the Padres. Were you in the press box today?

mendozaline, I was not in the press box. I’m writing on the Warriors and the NBA draft. But Grant was there and wrote a column.

I am in lockstep with Bob in Portland on this.

The latest nutty Republican post office proposal came last month when the
Republican-controlled House Oversight and Government Reform Committee
voted along party lines to eliminate mail to door delivery for some 15 million
homes and have these folks stroll down the street to a cluster box somewhere
to pick up their mail. As it stands now, the post office can’t unilaterally refuse
delivery to your box (unless you don’t correct a safety hazard such as an unrestrained
dog or collapsing porch) unless you sign a consent form to accept delivery at a
different location. The PM General proposed such action about a year ago as
    a possible course.

But don’t worry, even if everyone else on your block were to be so dumb as
to sign such a form, you’ll still get door delivery if you don’t sign.

(New construction often has cluster boxes, but people who don’t like that
feature should buy a different home.)

You know what I always respected about this blog? That no one ever started ranting about politics. We have converced about a lot of stuff not assiciated with sports and I have never heard “blame it on the Republicans”, or “blame it on the Democrats”. B-Rad and Bob have ruined it for all of us. We can no longer say “we are above that”. And we have two Democrats to blame.

You must be new to this blog, Stan (where has he gone?) blamed every evil in the world on rich white conservative men.
