The final book I read on vacation was John Irving’s 1989 novel “A Prayer for Owen Meany.” I liked it a lot — for a million reasons. I went online and read some reviews which appeared when the book was published. These reviews were highly critical, which surprised me. Have you read the book? What do you think of it?

APFOW is the only book that ever made me cry. One of a select few I will reread multiple times.

Haven’t read it but heard (I think) that it is a low-rent version of Robertson Davies’ “Fifth Business.”

Jack Orion, Irving is a devotee of Robertson Davies and Gunter Grass, but there is nothing low rent about Owen Meany.

Read a prayer for OM last year and loved it. I am slightly older than you and liked the revisiting of my attitude on the Vietnam war. I was a navy dentist assigned to a marine corps fleet marine division.before the Vietnam war . I was ready to go and stop the advance of communism in Southeast Asia. Now I realize what a pile of pucky the government was feeding us.
If you want to read a great new book, read “the husband’s secret” by Leanne moriarty. Great!
