Bruce Bochy conducted a post-workout news conference in the home dugout at Scottsdale Stadium. He sat on the bench and dozens of media people crowded around him. He had stents put in a few days ago and, although he is fine, there are hollows under his eyes and hollows on his cheeks. What he went through wasn’t like visiting the dentist. He was in a good mood, obviously happy to be doing what he does.

Hunter Pence was in one of his contrary moods. He answered several questions saying “I don’t know how to answer that question.” No one asked him to explain Relativity. Pence is a good guy but when he becomes Contrary Hunter, I stay away.

Matt Cain was in a Pence mood. Not sure why. Grant asked Cain to describe the difference in feel between a slider and a curveball to which Cain said, “I don’t know how to answer that question.”

Sergio Romo sure knew how to answer the question, was quite specific. Jeremy Affeldt knew how to answer it, too. I wonder if there’s a movement among some Giants to say, “I don’t know how to answer that question.”

I hope not. It’s a conversation stopper. If Cain and Pence drop by the restaurant tonight, Barry Bloom, Marty Lurie and I happily will buy them a glass of wine. If they want a recommendation, I certainly know how to answer that question.
