49ers radio analyst Tim Ryan spoke about Chris Borland retiring on KNBR this morning. Among other things Ryan said, “This isn’t punitive on Borland, and I love the guy and I want to see him play — Patrick Willis retired, Chris Borland quit.”

Ryan said an unfortunate thing and in doing so made himself look bad. Borland is entitled to do what he wants with his life. Borland deserves praise for making a brave decision — the decision to give up fame and money. There never is anything wrong with that. Choosing an alternative path is not quitting. It is choosing an alternative path.

I understand why Ryan is upset. He roots for the Niners and Borland hurt the team by leaving. I’m sure Ryan soon will understand he let his emotions get in the way. And then he’ll feel bad and apologize and show he’s a good guy.
