Link to my Friday Warriors column.
Any other threats? Yes. The Spurs, despite their combined age of a thousand. Never, ever count them out until they’re dead and buried. And I’m intrigued by the Blazers. They probably peaked too early but they didn’t just beat the Warriors, they destroyed them. Enjoyed the ‘lovelorn octopus’, by the way. Shades of Red Smith.
Fritz, I got it from Red Smith. I read that description years ago and used it last night as an homage to Red. Great writer nice man.
OKC has failed to build a title team for many seasons now after making the Finals. Durant must see that and he doesn’t appear to be a dope at all. I’ve got to believe the W’s have a major opportunity at getting him. He’s an all time great. No brainer.
The Spurs are clearly the W’s greatest threat and that will be the story as they play 3 times in the remaining season. OKC was the news of the moment. I’d rather play them in round 2 than the Clips based on what I’m seeing. The fact that both the Spurs and W’s are having historic seasons in the same year is proof that Barkley is right about the league. Overall, it’s quite poor as the elite 2 teams are so clearly head and shoulders above the rest. The second tier like OKC, Clips, Cleveland, etc… is only a few teams deep as well. The rest is pretty much un-watchable.
Another great column; you’re back killing it. When do you go to spring training?
streetglide, i start writing in arizona on monday
Yet another great article!
The biggest threat may not be a team or a player but the dreaded injury to a key player. Otherwise there really is not a team that has shown they could beat the Warriors in a seven game series. This morning I heard on the radio this thought: With how good the Warriors are on the road you really have to find a way to win not one game at Oracle, but realistically two games to beat the Warriors in a seven game series. A staggering thought for sure.
Here is how the West stacks up:
Spurs- Threat level: relatively high, but Warriors pose huge matchup problems for them and may simply out pace them in a seven game series.
Thunder- Threat level: Medium. Two good players but down the stretch, can’t defend consistently and not enough depth over seven games.
Clippers- Threat Level: Medium. Question will be can this team be a team and put it together consistently.
Mavericks- TL: Low. Can’t stay with the Warriors
Rockets:- TL: Low. See above.
Heck, rest of West, all low. Including Blazers, who had a win where they shot lights out for one game but they simply cannot do that consistently over a seven game series.
East: Toronto and Cleveland, who look like the East Contenders have depth and matchup problems as well.
Bottom line. Seven game series. Opponent would likely have to win twice at Oracle to beat the Warriors. And that is simply hard to fathom.
Have a great time. Watch out for Gila Monsters…
