Click here for my Thursday column on Chip Kelly.
Maybe if Kelly didn’t look so much like Spanky in the “Our Gang” comedies . . . This is San Francisco. Time to get svelte and be soignee.
Take several valid talking points, throw them all in the worst case scenario pot, and you’ve got the Zohn.
Ned Beatty will play Chip in the movie.
No, you’ve got the 49ers.
I think your points about Kelly/Niners, though negative, are on target. Besides getting jazzed up about his quick offense what else is there to get really excited about? He lost one wild card game then flamed out over two years and his defenses were awful. Oh yeah, and his players couldn’t stand him.
And the same could have been said of Jim Harbaugh in 2011. First person they signed was David Akers, everyone in the local media (print and radio) had a field day with that. Then it was 1st round flame out Braylon Edwards, then 1st round flame out Carlos Rogers, then the big splash was Donte Whitner. Then Blake Costanzo, Larry Grant, Jonathon Goodwin.
None of these players were big time free agents, Whitner being the biggest but still not a 1st or 2nd day guy.
This years free agent class is a joke. No reason to overpay for guys who will never live up to their value. Believe it was ESPN that had a stat that showed the top free agent spenders over the last 5+ seasons were the Jags, Dolphins, Raiders, Eagles Titans, Jets, Bears, and a couple others, but ALL of them were and are bottom dwellers.
Free agency is the biggest con game going in the NFL. Remember when the raiders got aaron brooks…warren sapp…javon walker….larry brown.
If the 49ers aren’t signing anyone, thats probably a good sign.
Link to comments offering some insight to Kelly’s handling complex interpersonal situations. Short, good read.
Doesn’t bother me much. Not a lot of great talent to talk about, though I did want KC’s Smith. Losing him to the Raiders was a hit, but perhaps he wanted to get back at KC since he’ll play them twice a year now. Is it September yet?
@I Want My Maypo,
I think Chip looks like “Spanky” from Our Gang…lolZ?!
Free agency has always been more of a crapshoot than anything else. And usually the most important signings are the ones where teams keep players that fit into what they do as a team and organization. Or it those small signings where those players take small contracts and find a system and situation that fits what they can do on the field that has the largest impact.
However, the lack of interest from some “big name” free agents also says something, especially when they have so much cap space available.
The Niners are simply the gift that keeps on giving at the moment.
I am troubled that you are pushing the “defense is on the field all the time” line, when the Eagles defense spent only 32 seconds more on the field in 2015 than the 49ers defense. That’s not to say that either were effective, but if the 2015 49ers offense had scored 25 points per game, it would have won 10 games. Can Chip Kelly manufacture 25 points per game on offense?
