Sorry to read that Robinson turned out this way. Years ago when I lived in the Bay Area I enjoyed his easy speech. Never heard him in any football broadcasts, I must admit. Most sorry to hear that his colors are showing this way…as one gets older i would think wisdom starts settling in. Nice column and well written, as always….sorry to hear he treated you as he did, you deserve better.
Lowell – Do you know if he is hired by the team to be the PBP guy or is he hired by the radio station independent of the team? Some clubs have autonomy over the broadcast team as part of the agreement with their flagship station and network while others receive dollars from a network, and the network hires the PBP guy and the analyst. If the Niners are paying Robinson’s salary, then he is a mouthpiece for the team rather than an objective PBP guy. I prefer listening to the objective voices rather than the club mouthpiece because the interpretation of the action is more real. Back in the 1950s and 60s the Niners games were enjoyable listening on the radio. In fact, the Niners, Raiders and Giants had some great announcing teams for decades. Who ever can forget Russ Hodges and Lon Simmons and of course the one and only Bill King!!
Mike, I think Robinson is employed by the team. If not, the team certainly has a big say in the hire.
Total agreement over here. I’m just confused as I always thought well of him. But the Niners experience has ruined him. He’s so completely partisan, it’s kind of embarrassing having a local broadcaster ignore the obvious warts on the team given all the great announcing talent that has come before him. You reference some of them here though I was never a great Starkey fan. Bill King would roll in his grave listening to some of these broadcasts. Tim Ryan is even worse so that tandem gets my vote as most ignoble in Bay Area history during my all too lengthy lifetime.
Remember that the Niners suspended him a few years ago for commenting during that wave of substance abuse/sexual abuse behavior by players? The guy wants to keep his job. As far as whether or not you enjoy his commentary during a broadcast, I’m now living out of the Bay Area so I can’t comment on that. Suffice it to say that Niner games the last few years have not been particularly good on any level. Robinson sounds okay to me on Pac 12 games. Robinson will sound better if Chip Kelly can turn around the franchise.
36 years later and he’s doing Olympic diving trials on NBC cable?
Whatever happened to the Mets gig?
Poor guy needs the job Lowell and has convinced himself the best way to suck up to Jed is to look down on you. Pathetic? Sure…
Good point, Stan Jose
I agree with pretty much everything you said, especially, that Starkey was much better. Robinson is a homer like Fitz, but Fitz can make a Warrior game a lot more exciting and so you forgive the homer part. Robinson is just boring.
It would appear I’m solidly in the minority here, but I thought Starkey was awful. I’d take Robinson over him any day.
Once he went KNBR? There was no turning back. Fully indoctrinated. Plus..a lousy voice.
