Jed- its well known too- just lucked out on Harbaugh. He made JH a much lower offer then the Miami Dolphins did but Harbaugh wanted badly to follow in the footsteps of Bill Walsh. So,he took a lesser offer and frankly Jed treated him second rate the whole time.
If he didn’t see Harbaugh was an elite coach, and gave him the “Don’t let the door hit you on the buttocks on yer way out”, I see this franchised doomed. Doomed to Billy Beane like antics forced through the Jed mold.
Stan is kee-rect!
With all due respect to you Lowell … who really freaking cares? I usually intro myself as a fanatical 49er fan from 1967-2014. After the Harbaugh firing? I was through rooting for a team run by these jokers. I don’t usually read your columns anymore on the team, but this came into my email. And Lowell … what possible significance is it that you LIKE Baalke and Jed? As a fan, why would I even care about how nice they are to you? Jed and Baalke obviously didn’t LIKE Jim Harbaugh, a true football miracle worker as a coach. he take a decade long lousy team and turns it into a Super Bowl contender in his FIRST year! This team will lose for a decade with Jed on top. Probably doesn’t matter if he fires the worst GM in all of the NFL because you’re right, he’ll screw up the next hire too and no doubt the one after that. Somehow Dallas got a hot young QB in the 4th round that was great in college too and the 49ers have Blaine freaking GABBERT starting at QB?????? Ha ha … can you imagine Walsh even having this guy on the team as the backup?
You know what I decided. It’s simply MORE fun to root for this team to lose now. It really is. That Rams game ticked me off. I love it when they lose and those absolutely MORONIC press conferences during the week by those coaches are a complete hoot. They all sound like walking idiot machines. So they fire Baalke (inevitable by the way) and hire this Gamble guy, whoever the heck he is.
You win in the NFL with GREAT players, GREAT coaches and GREAT personnel people. Bill Walsh was great, so was Jim Harbaugh. The sad truth for a lousy team like the Santa Clara 49ers is that there are only a small amount of the above alive on the planet. When you have one or have the opportunity to get one, you need to KEEP that guy or get that guy. You think there are any of these floating around the NFL or college? Or if there are, they want to hook up with the freaking 49ers???? Ha ha. Please get real. Use your common sense, ok? This is the Bucs and Bengals who each spent over a decade losing almost every game they played. This is the beginning of twenty years of being the football equivalent of what the Clippers used to be in basketball.
I think you over state the importance of who Jed knows or doesn’t know. Fire Baalke and put a “GM Wanted” add in the NFL Gazette and you will have more resumes and references than you have time to look at.
You cannot build a winning team through the draft when you don’t know how to draft. Baalke has whiffed too many times on first and second round picks. He needs to go or at the very least turn the draft over to someone who knows what they are doing.
Having said that, I am starting to wonder if the cost of the new stadium is having an affect on the 49er roster. How much cap space do they have, 40 million? I think it might be more. You can pay a lot of bills with the 40 million you are not paying to players. You can also rebuild your cash reserves that might have been depleted building the stadium. I am just saying, or wondering actually.
Baalke still needs to go or let someone else run the draft.
I understand and agree with one of the key assertions of this piece-the only way the Niners become a “real football organization” again is if Jed hires a President of football operations and steps completely to the business side of the organization (or even just sits and counts the money in his office). The Pres. would then hire the GM, and the GM would hire the coach, etc. and Jed would never again choose any of the football decision makers. He’s awful at it, just as his dad was. And I think there’s always a danger that a bad football decision will be made if he’s the one who has to make it.
However, I don’t think he’ll do that, and I do think the football team will get better with Baalke gone. In fact, I think there’s a chance that me or any of the regular posters here could phone in the draft and do better at it than Baalke in recent years. He’s been spectacularly bad in recent years. Their talent is awful, he likes way too many injured players and they’ve drafted no QBs recently so now they’re stuck between Blaine Gabbert and a QB who’s protesting with high school football players and hanging out with former NBA protesters instead of hitting the playbook. Baalke’s tenure has degenerated beyond incompetence and into malpractice. The Raiders have drafted three potential superstars in the last three years, and the Niners have drafted none. On top of that, they stole Connor Cook this year when they already have a QB and a solid backup. That’s a winning strategy.
Jed also seems to need to project that he actually knows what he’s doing in spite of the mountain of contrary evidence, so I believe he’ll promote Gamble and act like he had a plan all along. Which he probably kinda did when he brought in Gamble and then Kelly, but let’s be real. That’s not the deep end of the thinking pool.
I think the most dangerous people are those who don’t know what they don’t know. Jed has not hired someone to run football because he doesn’t know that he’s terrible at it.
