It’s been apparent for some time the Niners won’t improve until Jed is completely removed from football decisions. He got one hire right- Jim Harbaugh- and screwed that up royally. Harbaugh built Michigan into a national power overnight and the 49ers are stuck in a years-long rebuild with an overwhelmed college coach.
Would York even consider hiring a Football man now? He’s already paying The Butcher’s salary and hiring a President of Football Operations would mean firing Gamble, and Kelly and eating their salaries too so the new guy could start over with his own people.
I don’t see it. I think he’ll fire Baalke, act like he had this plan all along with Gamble and let it limp along and hope like hell they get a QB with the top pick in the draft. Either way I think Kelly gets 2-3 more years.
Empty seats and corporate sponsors turning to the Warriors and other bay area teams are the only pressure he’ll acknowledge. If he cared about winning, he’d have fired Baalke and kept Harbaugh.
Michigan was always a national power, he just brought the right scheme and coaching to take advantage of the underutilized talent on that team (like he did in 2011 with SF).
I agree with mj here. Harbaugh has the ability to maximize and motivate players, like he did at Stanford, the Niners and now Michigan. The upperclassman on his roster are the results of the recruiting done by his predecessor, Brady Hoke, who can recruit with the best of them, but not a head coach or leader of a program like a Harbaugh, Saban or Meyer. Kelly, a true college coach (see the article where Merrill Hodge, a guy who knows the NFL, says as much about this) can win at the college level, but could never win it all, needs to do that, go back to college.
Shane, do you know for certain that Jed is involved with football decisions right now. I am sure hiring a coach has to be approved by ownership, as with any NFL team, but beyond that do you actually know for sure he is involved?
He was made CEO of the team years ago Dennis, and he makes all the decisions and whenever someone is hired or fired he announces and introduces. I’ve never heard or read that John or Denise have approval on hirings or firings.
That wasn’t my point. How do you know if Baalke is making the football decisions or Jed? I certainly don’t but thought maybe you had something that told you it was all Jed all of the time. John and Denise have nothing to do with my question.
I guess I’m confused. I mean Jed hires and fires the GM and coach. Ho chose Baalke and Chip Kelly., and Jim Tomsula before that and Mike Singletary before that. I did not mean to imply he decides game plans or makes personnel decisions although I suspect that he’d sign off on free agent signings. And what I mean specifically is that someone else ought to be football president and choose the GM and coach, or let the GM choose the coach.
My understanding is that he hired Baalke and Baalke hired each of the coaches, starting with Harbaugh. Just because Lowell’s article states something else doesn’t mean it is true. He tends to speculate sometimes to make his point.
So if your whole problem really is that he hired the GM, which I don’t disagree with, why can’t Jed fire the GM and hire a new one? Why does someone else need to hire the GM in order to achieve success?
Where I am going is that you stated nothing is going to improve until Jed is removed from football decisions. I am trying to understand what decisions you think he makes and why you think someone else can make them any better. Baalke hasn’t been great but he did hire Harbaugh and they did go to a few conference championships and a Super Bowl so it hasn’t been a total disaster.
Your column seems a little harsh. You do realize, he isn’t gong anywhere, right?
He might. He could like Lowell says, save face by giving himself a new title- like Billy Beane did.
Only with Jed,I would expect him to truly not meddle…for the first couple of years. Beans and Sabeans replacements both sound like taking orders from above wusses. Jed? the heat for him might actually get him to walk away with some space.
I have no doubt some day this little puke will grow up to manage his family fortune just fine and all the mistakes he has made will help him in his future endeavors. So Listen up Mr Mrs York, its time to pull the plug go out and find the Brightest winning up and coming Couch in Collage. Make sure it is someone on the same caliber as Harbaugh .Then go out and get Mr wizard maybe a Great forty Niner allum like Shanninan or Holmgren. Then put this team back on the wheels of greatness. This is about more then money at the same time think of the money.
See the tire fires Shanahan and Holmgren left behind in their last stops. Retreads from the past won’t save this team.
I enjoyed the personal “son” references like a dad to a kid. It’s personal at this point for me as well. This man-child who was gifted a football team must go. He is contaminating the great legacy of the franchise. Obviously, all we can do is not purchase the product in protest. I dunno…..maybe more signs behind planes will get the ball rolling.
I was at Century Link Field in Seattle this past Sunday. You talk about home field advantage! What a scene that place is…. The energy! The noise! Intimacy between players and fans! The love for that team! It’s the best football environment I’ve experienced. Then there is Levi’s. I have no problem with Santa Clara, but that stadium is an open invitation to check out of the action and spend money on food and beer. Great sports bar to watch the game on TVs behind the scene while the game is going on. How could they have screwed up the design that much!? Because football isn’t, and never has been, the priority, with these people. Even the field sucks. It just screams, “we don’t care about home field advantage, or the football product at all. Just go buy our food and beer.” It’s not even a good tailgate scene as they want you to buy into a special price point for that! This is an embarrassment to their own legacy.
There is no comparison between Paul Allen and the entire York clan put together, let alone Little Jed York.
Levi’s was built as a Concert Venue, for Baby Showers, Wedding Receptions, & other Special Events. So ya see the York’s are still making money even if the 49ers don’t. The Fans are the Losers here….Smdh.
The head of the snake is Denise.
Denise sits in the compound outside Youngstown and uses our California Cash to rebuild Papa Debartolo’s empire.
They have no interest in the 49ers as a San Francisco institution.
Your “son” Jed is just the bag man and he’s not going anywhere.
The 49ers you remember died the day Eddie forgot to take the money bands marked with his account number off the $500,000 bribe he gave to the Governor of Louisiana.
They’re not coming back.
Funniest fact about Jed? He announced he was going on a “World Wide” search for the best possible GM. “No stone unturned”..then he hired the guy down the hall.
That was it. That was ultimate Jedism. The mark. It sealed the deal.
We have a long wait before the 49ers get so good, that Jed tweets “I am embarrassed that we have an 8-8 football team”.
Funnier than “any year we don’t win the Super Bowl is a failure?” Or, “win with class.” Or, “got a stop watch” when asked about how quick Baalke would be on the clock to bring home a Super Bowl. He’s a clown. There so many hits to choose from!
Here is the list of the top 10 NFL teams by wins since 2000:
Patriots- 209 wins, 22 playoff wins
Colts- 180, 12
Steelers- 177, 13
Packers- 171, 11
Ravens- 164, 15
Eagles- 162, 10
Broncos- 159, 6
Seahawks- 155, 13
Saints- 146, 7
Giants- 145, 10
The Niners? 19th on that list with 119 wins. with a bulk of them coming with one particular HC.
The common thread (one notable exception) is that in each case, the owner was smart enough to get people who know the game and know how to evaluate talent and know how to coach it to run their franchise. The exception is the Eagles, but keep in mind, before they ran Reid out of town they were one of the best in the game.
Oh, and each of the top 10, save for those Eagles, has a Superbowl victory since 2000. And in several cases, multiple wins and/or appearances.
Coincidence? Happenstance? Accident?
Or just smart people who know how to assemble the best talent?
On the positive- he kept the 49ers in San Francisco. No,wait…

For yer readers who haven’t heard. Lisa Debartolo re tweeted Lowells Jed must go Tweet. His cousin thinks Jed should go too. She has since deleted it with saying “I dont want to start trouble..lol” Something like that.
To think Eddie had Steve Mariucci,Bill Walsh,George Seifert…and Jed went with Mike,Mike,Chip..
How nice and cowardly of Radnich to use his hit man on you Lowell,so when he faces you he has an alibi. He wont tell you how hard he laughs or how he goads Kruger to keep going.
Its no wonder Radnich hides from media press boxes. And men.
Has anyone realized that Jed owns the fucking team? He’s not going anywhere.
Sorry John but Jed’s mom Denise owns the team.
