Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
I want Kent to get in just to see if he drives his monster truck to the ceremony. A bit mystified that Lee Smith can’t get in, but more so if Hoffman doesn’t get in. unequivocal dominance in my opinion- can’t read his name without hearing “Enter Sandman.” That’s other level.
I am also pleased that you take a hardline on known PED users. I’m tired of people who excuse this with a combination of “they were great before they started using,” or even worse, “everybody else was doing it too.” We can always wonder about that. With the guys who got caught we know for sure and there are no excuses. just like gambling. Show the highlights, appreciate what they did as much as you can, but sorry no Hall of Fame for besmirching the sport.
Great article! happy Thanksgiving Lowell!
Hoffman’s walk up music was Hell’s Bells..Enter Sandman was Mariano Rivera’s.
I guarantee you Lowell that some or many of the players you would vote for took PEDs also. So many did back then, including pitchers and infielders.
As long as the owners paid the players the highest money for hitting homers and the league rewarded these players with awards they should be allowed to be in the HOF.
Sports writers should not play the role of God, the judgement should be on the players performance. Bonds and Clemens and others are hall of famers.
Quit being a blockhead and vote them in. I know the fans would. Hypocrisy at its finest- keeping the best players out and putting in lesser players who also might have taken PEDs.
Somehow it makes the writers seem so small minded.
That tweet I sent Lowell quoting Harbaugh’s Holiday classic “Gobble, gobble, jive turkeys”?..I would have swore that was 2014?..
It’s from 2012. Fours years already?..I can’t keep up.
Bonds and Clemens deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. No ifs ands or buts.
1. Unless you are going to go back and retroactively remove players who admittedly took “greenies” etc to play the game (they are now illegal) out of the HOF, then any player who allegedly took anything or even if proven but it was not against the rules of baseball at the time, drop the argument already. You can’t prove who did or didn’t so it doesn’t matter. Best players of their era, yes or no?
2. Any sport match/game/event is a sporting event you attend. In other words: entertainment. Nothing more, nothing less. No different than a movie, play, concert or parade, it is simply a form of entertainment. And just like all entertainment businesses, they have their awards and HOF. For actors and actresses, they have the Oscars and what I call their HOF, the Cecile B. Demille award. In those cases they simply reward the best entertainers based on their performances. Nothing more and nothing less. In my humble opinion, it is about time sports did the same.
In the immortal words of Charles Barkley: “I am not a role model.” You are correct, you are just an entertainer. Perfectly said sir. Perfectly said.
