I presume Christian is on a full ride?
If so he’s being paid the taxable equivalent of $120,000 a year to attend a top five university.
Additionally he benefits from millions of dollars of publicity from the promotional machine of Stanford Athletics, the PAC 12, and the NCAA.
NCAA D1 football IS a disgrace but its top players are hardly indentured.
Christian is bought and paid for several times over and needs to do his damn job.
You sound ignorant. He isn’t paid anything. He goes to school and plays ball. You clearly don’t know how much money the universities get… Stanford can afford to give every student a scholarship thanks to the revenue they get from their programs… notice that they don’t? You’re an idiot.
It’s always a pleasure to be called an idiot anonymously.
Clearly you’ve never gone to college and have no idea about things like tuition and loans and all.
Christian has that all taken care of for him…
he also has tutors and medical care and travel, and books and meals paid for 100%.
Stanford pays him around $600,000 over four years. Money that neither he nor has parents ever have to pay for or pay back.
That’s more than you’ll make in a lifetime delivering my pizza.
When you buy your frozen dinner with your snap card tonight be sure to say thanks to every person on the blog.
Stan, you have any ting to back those numbers up or are you just pulling out of your ass.
I tend to fall in line with the 2nd part of your column. The only thing on the line in the Sun Bowl is money and none of it is going to the players. If there was something on the line for the team, like a title of some sort, I would agree with the 1st part of your column – he would be selfish not to play. But the Sun Bowl……..
Agreed. The issue is sort of new (a version of it was when Jadeveon Clowney sort of bailed on his Gamecocks team and coaches a few years ago) and is going to make for a lot of arguments that are inconsistent. I think McCaffrey is bailing on his team, but that it’s not very important (or harmful, because Stanford is going to smear North Carolina without him) due to circumstances. But if they were playing in the Rose Bowl and he didn’t show up, that would be a grand case of disloyalty. I don’t think a conference should have the right to force any of its members into any of the lesser bowl games. The team should have the right to vote on whether or not they want to accept the invitation. Could be the Cardinal would have voted to stay home for the holidays, knowing any performance in El Paso is unlikely to be a part of legend.
What was all that garbage? Why would players vote to not play in the Sun Bowl? How idiotic to even think that.
Yes, idiotic possibly–but not imbecilic.
Don’t flatter yerself- even THAT is above yer level.
Harsh. But then you are harsh on many sports figures and fans. My guess is you’d refuse, in light of your statements about the Sun Bowl situation, to have a cup of egg nog with Christian McCaffrey.
I don’t know whether it’s possible, but if it is, in the future you’ll probably see scholarships structured so that if you’re healthy, you HAVE to play. Take it or leave it.
This is an indictment of meaningless bowl games AND of the way Shaw overused him for the last couple of seasons. I know Shaw is the darling of the Pac12 coaching fraternity and the object of lust for every NFL GM in need, including the Niners, but his offensive philosophy has a severe lack of imagination and has held back this impressive program for years. I was at the Colorado game where they had 2-3 guys spying on Christian each and every play and he still got the ball endlessly on predictable runs. He got crushed over and over. Special teams, short pass receiver…..this guy touched the ball more than anyone I’ve ever seen in the college game.
Shaw’s a good college coach who recruits well but he misused Luck in his final season and chained Hogan with that antiquated run-over-you big O line offense for years until he had no choice last season due to injuries. But that’s just the thing, he fails to diversify his offense properly until he has no other choice. Even with all that focus on his star back, he gave him the ball constantly until the kid finally got injured this year. I don’t blame Christian McCaffrey one bit for making this decision. Obviously, if it was one of the playoff games, it’d be different. But it’s the Sun Bowl against a silly ACC team. Give me a break.
I agree with you on every point. I think Shaw is overrated and under imaginative. If they didn’t have McCaffrey Stanford would be very hard to watch.
He’s back stabbing his team. He’s also saying he’s a quitter. Plus,he might get in a auto wreck in Palo Alto…when he could have been safe in Bowl game city-driven around.
You named one player who got hurt. I’m sure too a few others over the decades. Counter that with a million who played with no problems and others who’s value went UP with a great bowl game performance. Anybody remember JaMarcus?
I doubt we will see a trend since most players would feel like whats the point of playing for nothing but a pro tryout? The Sun Bowl isnt the National Championship..but the bay area isnt exactly a backwater. You would think Ed would have taught his kid to show some loyalty to Stanford.
Unless..he has a problem with David Shaw’s coaching. That would be another story…
Too bad for you, he can decide what to do with HIS career. Nobody tell you what to do at Ace Hardware imbecile.
I would never stab my fellow Ace Hardware employee’s in the back. Like you and Chrissy.
Our local Ace Hardware guy always looks angry, confused, and skewing toward, yes, imbecilic. Could it be our CZe-StanL’Homme?
For working 3 jobs at KNBR,Poop pickup.com and, troll is me. com Light, you sure have time to say nothing. Typical Trump voter, you cant get yer story straight.
OOH you aren’t THE JAKE TORRES are you?????.
Ha ha yet none of us are Christian and as such cannot say what HE should do. Continually proving my point Dolt.
A. Its called opinion. Look up the meaning of the word.
B. That I know yer an ass and its obvious to everybody but you proves MY point about….you.
Huh? Wha? Ace, Hard, what ?
What are you babbling about Mr. Jake Simpleton?
You committed to a school and a program. Honor said commitment.
And don’t forget that these Bowls have sponsors, who want something for their dollars too. The sponsors of this game surely like the McCaffery name on the marquee for their advertising dollar and and such. If trends like this continue, you will see bowl games lose sponsors and games eliminated, which will cost Universities money and it will go from there.
Good! There should only be 2-5 bowl games max. Also shut the hell up because if it were mandatory, he’d play.
So where exactly would you replace the millions of dollars that schools and conferences obtain from going to bowl games?
Why does it need to be replaced? Plenty of good universities lack football programs and do just fine. Now tell me that it’s not a business…
Never said it wasn’t, but the replacement dollars have to come from someplace, increase in tuition?
Already gone up 300% in the last decade.
Did not answer question. Where do the dollars that you just eliminated come from then?
I’m not a chancellor nor is this a real scenario. Typical douchbag clouding the real issue and that’s Christian’s right to sit out the bowl game. Too bad for you, he gets to skip it. Your life is now officially over.
What is the real issue? I merely pointed out what could become a side effect to decisions like this, nothing more. Sure he can sit it out. Totally his call. But the more this happens, the more scholarships will have language preventing this type of action written in to it etc. It is, afterall, a business.
Dude, you are talking about Stanford. They have more money than God. Get real.
Is this some new name Art? Amazing how the new names have an old act. Shut the Hell up!!!! SHUT THE HELL UP!!!!!. I’m Jake!!!
Though I do agree that McCaffery was being over usedabused, in his metrics
(ie:40 speed, bench press, vertical leap etc)there will be a question mark about his commitment to his team. I guarantee the GMs will be wary of this, like it or not and it will be a negative mark on his chart. Footballs brutal.
SO .?? then pay the players. The hypocrisy of NCAA football.
It’s just a meaningless bowl game. Why should ANY player risk their career there. Just skip it.
I saw 3 out o4 ch2 Sports Final peeps said Christian is a greedy backstabber. Only Ibanez- Old,with money..wants Christian to do nothing for Stanford.
You know you see star QB’s or RB’s buy linemen presents for Christmas. All Stanford lineman- a bowl win their life highlight in athletics- is ask McCaffery to play one more game.
He wont do it.
I promise- he’s going to do no better then Gerhart maybe not much more then the Rugby guy. A big game in the Sun Bowl would have helped him.
Maybe- it IS that his father doesnt like the way Shaw uses him . Anybody asked Ed? Man,reporters dont seem to be interested in asking questions much these internet days.
After the Sun Bowl, you can either look at it as McCaffery is laughing last..or his backup proved why you play bowl games even when you join the draft. His stock went way up for whatever year he graduates.
Plus- Shaw told Chris to stay home. So,I guess that proves he was perturbed.
