I don’t like Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

Here is an early link to my Tuesday column about Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao. The full text runs below: I don’t like Floyd Mayweather, Jr. I like Manny Pacquiao. I hope Pacquiao beats Mayweather Saturday night. I hope Pacquiao knocks him out. I object to Mayweather on two grounds — moral and athletic. Let’s handle the moral issue first. He is a woman beater. He served time in the slammer for beating up his girlfriend in front of their… Read More »

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao

Here is a link to my column about Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. The full text runs below: Boxing promoter Bob Arum says Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will fight each other in 2015. Arum may know what he’s talking about. Fight fans have waited years for this fight. I have waited years for this fight. It should have happened in 2007. Maybe 2008. Mayweather and Pacquiao are the best fighters in the world. Who would win? It’s a… Read More »

Mayweather outpoints Guerrero

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the least satisfying great fighter I know of. He’s surely a great fighter — great defense, precision puncher. But there is nothing dangerous about him, lethal about him, dramatic about him. He outpointed Robert Guerrero but never hurt him, never had him in trouble, never knocked him down, never scored a 10-8 round. Mayweather hurt his right hand, but still. Thomas Hearns, Ray Leonard, Ray Robinson, Carmen Basilio, Emile Griffith, Jose Napoles all were more exciting,… Read More »

Floyd Mayweather was not wrong

Before the Niners game starts I need to get in my 2 cents about Floyd Mayweather. The question is whether he did wrong by clocking Victor Ortiz when Ortiz did not think they were fighting. Mayweather did the right thing. Or more correctly he didn’t do the wrong thing. Ortiz had blatantly and intentionally fouled Mayweather by ramming his head into Mayweather’s. The ref Joe Cortez separated them and deducted a point from Ortiz. Ortiz kissed Mayweather as a form… Read More »

Does Manny Pacquiao duck blacks?

Bernard Hopkins used to be a great fighter but he’s not a great thinker. He said Manny Pacquiao is ducking Floyd Mayweather Jr. in particular and blacks in general. He said a black fighter with a black style — whatever that is — could beat Pacquiao. Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis are black. Do they have the same style? Hmm. For starters, if a white fighter said Pacquiao is ducking whites you can bet the press and many fans would… Read More »

Mayweather arrested

Floyd Mayweather has been arrested for grand larceny. He allegedly stole stuff from his girlfriend’s apartment where he allegedly came in uninvited and where he allegedly beat her up. I long have been a Mayweather advocate — strictly as a boxer, not as a human being. I admire his boxing skill, although I’m not wild about his safety-first style. I interviewed him once in Vegas and I can tell you he’s funny and engaging and a blast to be around.… Read More »

Floyd Mayweather Jr. = disgusting

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. recently created a video in which he takes aim at Manny Pacquiao. This is very interesting. So far Mayweather hasn’t shown the desire to take aim at Pacquiao in a ring — merely in a video. Is that brave? This is a disgusting video and shows Mayweather for what he is — a crude, homophobic, racist wretch. In the video he puts down gays, calls Pacquiao a “whore,” and a “midget,” and once again accuses him of using… Read More »
