When I wrote sports columns I never talked politics — as far as I can remember. I take that back. I questioned Kaepernick talking politics in the locker room after real games and I expressed disappointment that an activist like him did not vote. But I usually stayed away from politics. I was a sporstwriter. I’m not sophisticated about politics.

I find it interesting that Steve Kerr and Gregg Popovich, two hoops coaches, have gone off on Trump and Sean Spicer. Felt compelled to do it. Certainly their right. As far as I can tell, people applaud them for expressing their views.

What if Kerr or Popovich had praised Trump? I bet people would have told them to shut up, that no one cares what a coach says about politics.

I could be wrong, but I think I’m right. And if I’m right, something seems unbalanced about what people are prepared to listen to and to praise. After all, Trump got elected president.
