I dare Jimmy Raye to use Brian Westbrook the right way. I double dare him. What we know about Raye is this. He’s bright but he’s conservative — highly conservative. He wants a savage running game and a limited passing game. I don’t like that formula — it seems Stone Age to me — but I could be wrong.

Well, now Raye has Westbrook a truly versatile back — think Roger Craig. Westbrook can run and he can fake out defenders and he can catch passes like a wide receiver. So, let Raye open up the playbook when Westbrook is in the game. Let Raye show us he knows how to utilize this special talent — if the often-injured Westbrook still is a special talent.

Jimmy Raye, the 49ers resident hemorrhoid, is 63 years old, in public
life and still calling himself Jimmy. When I think of the name Jimmy, I
think of a 5 year-old screaming brat riding his 20″ bicycle with training
wheels and wearing a beanie with a spinning propeller on top.
OK, there was a peanut farmer named Jimmy, but he was only a one-
term President and had he been James, he never would have pulled us out of the Olympics, handing it to the Russians and dashing the hopes of hundreds
    of American would-be Olympians.
Jimmy Johnson? You respected him as a coach but now he’s in his 60′s
and have you seen his commercial? WHAT A PIG!! Now he’s nothing more
than a media whore. Or a media horror, embarrassing every man in
    America.
Jimmy Dean? Nobody knows he’s an old guy who’s dead now. They
    think he’s young.
The only adult named Jimmy should be a drunken swill passed out
under some bar stool in Tupelo, Mississippi. No, also these homeless
bums I trip over in Union Square when I’m heading to Neiman Marcus
to drop $2400 on an Armani Washed Napa Jacket for my girlfriend -
    they’re all named Jimmy too!
I hate people with stupid names!!

    .
FYI…Jimmy Johnson will be a cast member on the next installment of Survivor.
    .
    Jimmy Johnson, a media horror?
    .
    You are correct sir!

    .
Lowell: Westbrook should be used strictly as a 3rd down, change of pace, pass-catching threat out of the backfield-type.
    .
His body cannot take any more punishment than that.
    .
Give him 8-12 carries a game and he will flourish.
    .
He will stay healthy–the Niners will be happy.
    .
That is IF he stays on the roster past TC…

Lowell…nothing personal but I miss Ira Miller more every year…
Westbrook is a desparation signing that makes no sense at all…like KRobert says…he’s a third down back…maybe…
They LOVED HIM in Philly but the Eagles couldn’t find 1.25million to see if the guy has anything left?
Hello? They know the man’s tank is empty…that’s why he isn’t wearing green…
I still don’t know who’s running the 49ers but they appear to be reactive in every phase of the organization…it’s gonna be a long season…

LC: Don’t pay any attention to Tiburon Dave. You are Ira”s biggest fan and know better than anyone that he is THE MAN. You are doing a commendable job, and like THE MAN,you don’t pull any punches. So get over it Tiburon, Ira aint comin back and neither is Glenn Dickey. And I miss Nancy Gay in a big way also.

Thanks, Crescent City Jeff. I have tried hard to get Ira back in the Zohn but there are circumstances beyond my control. Lowell

Tell me, how were the 9ers supposed to be pro-active about this? No one foresaw Coffee wussing out.

    Mr. Duh…
You and I may not have been able to foresee Coffey’s change of plans but the fact that his employer was caught by surprise is VERY BAD…same thing with Balmer…
Coach Singletary has says repeatedly that one tool he uses to judge players is “the look in their eyes”…wonderful…but can they play? and apparently more on point…DO THEY WANT TO PLAY?
The first team was TERRIBLE at Indy…don’t let the final score fool you…this team does not look good…

    Lowell & Jeff…
There is no question that Lowell Cohn is the dean of sports colomnists in the Bay Area. No one asks the hard questions better than my fellow New Yorker while maintaining professional respect for the individuals he covers. It’s why I read all of his stuff and take the time to comment at all…
I was simply lamenting the current state of the newspaper business here and everywhere…journalism appeares to be a dying art in the face of a well placed tweet…
Nancy Gay was on her way to being as good as Ira…I miss them both and what they represent…they know the game…

Tiburon: Good points all, totally with you on that, especially concerning LC, THE MAN in waiting. Nancy told me a couple of years ago that she basically idolized Ira, and that he took the time to help nurture her budding NFL writing career, including, no doubt, several intriductions to league GM’s.
For what it’s worth, Ray Ratto gets my respect along with LC, for his insights as well as his humorous approach.
