Zohn readers have been clamoring for word from the great Ira Miller. They want to know what Ira makes of the flapdoodle between Mike Singletary and KPIX. We here at the Zohn aim to please. I phoned Ira, who was well aware of the controversy. Here is what he said:

“It’s a coach’s show kind of thing. It’s a 49ers production. It’s not journalism. I would assume it’s a paid show. It’s a promotional vehicle.”

Lowell: Do you think Singletary took advantage of KPIX?

Ira: “I don’t feel sorry for either side. You enter into a business arrangement, that’s what you get. You have to make clear what they are paying you for. Again, I assume KPIX is paying — all this stuff should be covered long before they ever put a microphone on. Why should anyone be surprised a sports team exercises control over the content of a promotional program? I assume it’s a paid appearance by the coach. Anyone listening to this stuff for the next Watergate is delusional. That’s what we’re there for (reporters) – to get real news.”

Note 1: There are definitely cash considerations between KPIX and the 49ers – KPIX sends the team a check for Singletary’s interview.

Note 2: Ira told me he’s content with life except he couldn’t break 90 the last six times he played golf.
