I praise Mark Davis for hiring Reggie McKenzie and for doing it fast. I believe McKenzie will clear out the deadwood in the Raiders organization. I praise Davis for letting McKenzie do his thing, including firing Hue Jackson.

But I have one serious criticism of Davis. Tuesday was Davis’ first press conference, a time for him to make a good impression, a time for him to make nice, a time for him to keep the focus on the team and the new GM. He was telling everyone that this is a new day, that this was a feel-good moment. That’s quite a bit of focus he had to deal with.

But Davis immediately chose to take the focus away from all things positive. He told reporters he’s exploring moving the team to LA. By doing that Davis immediately introduced tension, rancor, possibly even a threat. That was no way to conduct a coming-out party — his and McKenzie’s.

He could have waited to drop the LA bomb — a week, a month, whatever.

He should have let everyone enjoy what was there for the enjoying. He needs to learn tact.
