In case you missed it, Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis issued a joint statement about the bounty hunting on the Saints:

“We acknowledge that the violations disclosed by the NFL during their investigation of our club happened under our watch. We take full responsibility.”

Don’t you just love that? The two rogues take full responsibility — whatever that means — except nothing in their statement shows them taking full responsibility.

They acknowledge these things happened. Well, hallelujah! They had better acknowledge since the whole world knows what happened. So acknowledging is no big gesture on their part.

They also say the violations “happened under our watch.”

The subject of that sentence is “the violations.” The violations happened and Payton and Loomis by coincidence were there in New Orleans at the time. Payton and Loomis are not the subject of the sentence. They are indirectly referred to — our watch — as the object of a preposition.

That’s hardly taking responsibility. That’s hardly even being in the sentence.

The truth, as I understand it, is that both knew what was going on and did nothing to stop it.

They should have written “we did nothing to stop it.”

They should have been the subject of the sentence.

They are weasling out of responsbility.

The league should ban them and Gregg Williams for life.
