Something odd is going on at 4949.
Some secretive dance between the Coach, the GM and the $13,000,000 man.
They’re not going to start him.
They can’t cut him and let Pete Carroll sign him for the vet minimum and download Chipper’s playbook.
My guess is they’re gonna RG III him. Put him on IR and trigger the disability policy.
Why would Kap accept a league minimum to go be a backup when he can get more than that to possibly start in a few spots (Minn, Den, Miami, Clev, NYJ, Dal and maybe even Detroit whom arent sold on Stafford).
Because in my humble opinion he doesn’t want to play anymore.
He wants to cash as many checks as possible and move on with his life.
If he wanted to play he’d be starting in Denver right now.
He wants money first and foremost(part of why he didn’t agree to renegotiate his deal for Denver), so league minimum is never happening, he would sign as a back up but not for 760k when a team like Dallas or Denver would pay him 10 times that and he still may not play.
You miss one point my friend. If the 49ers cut him…they have to pay his full contract anyway.
Then a trade will happen if anything, he will be relegated to Cleveland for a 6th round pick.
I would bet he wanted very badly to play in Denver but didn’t want to give up on the money. The Niners wouldn’t pay $5 mil for him to not play and Denver would only pay $7mil. So he makes $13 by sticking around SF and being a PITA, which I also think has benefits for him since I am betting he and managements are far from BFFs as this point.
I am betting with his injuries he is looking back at that team friendly deal he signed with great regret and wants every dollar he can get from here on out. But not the same as not wanting to play.
Being an even mediocre NFL QB is far too lucrative and there are far too many teams needing QBs for me to believe Kaepernick is done with football after this. He’ll move on and play somewhere and get paid what he can.
I am confused on a couple of levels here and hoping you can help me. You start out by saying that Gabbert hasn’t shown very much in his two appearances this season and Kaepernick has not played at all. All true. Then you end by saying Kelly is playing it very safe by not picking a quarterback yet. How is he playing it safe? One guy isn’t that great and the other guy hasn’t played at all. What would you do?
The other thing I am confused about is your take on Kaepernick’s honesty about his relationship with Baalke. What’s wrong with being honest? I found it very refreshing. I didn’t think he was being disrespectful at all. I thought he was saying this is all about business, which it most certainly is.
Final comment: I would be shocked if Kaepernick gets cut. The same thing was said in April when his current contract became guaranteed. They didn’t release him then and they won’t release him now. Did you watch the Denver game? They will come knocking before the season is over. If not them then someone else. Kaepernick will not start this season unless Gabbert gets hurt and he won’t be cut but he will be traded.
While Gabbert may not have blown away Colin, he sure as heck hasn’t lost the job with his performance. The fact he has led multiple scoring drives…multiple TD scoring drives, with 0 turnovers and 0 sacks says A LOT. Colin needs to not only go out an put up all pro type numbers, leading to scores on basically every drive he has, he definitely can not commit a turnover or get sacked. Nothing stalls drives like sacks and nothing kills games like ints, something Colin has been privy to do quite often. With Blaine you can see what he has done, which has been efficient and steadily improving with no major hiccups, and the hope is that as the season goes, that he will develop more of a rapport with his WRs and the oline will gel and the offense will be in the top 20 of the league. With Colin, we haven’t seen anything, and thats not good..
I don’t know if any of this is true but if it is, it’s the most dysfunctional organization in the Bay Area. Everyone covering their own backs, looking to blame others for anticipated failures….not exactly the recipe for a winning organization where a team of smart folks on the same page would act with single purpose in mind. Harbaugh must be thrilled to be out of here. I’m not sure why Kelly wanted to be here if this environment is as you suggest. Can it really be as simple as a paycheck? We are really in the midst of a dark Niner age if this is true.
I agree with other comments here….they will RGIII him before they cut him to protect their ’17 payroll.
For Kelly I don’t think this was a bad risk at all. It was an awful team last year with an awful coach, and anything remotely positive that happens will result in Kelly being lauded for it. Anything bad that happens is the fault of Baalke and ownership.
Kelly knows and likes Tom Gamble, and knows if the team fails this year it will be Baalke’s head that rolls and not his and then Gamble takes over personnel. Since York promoted Gamble recently he also gets to pretend it was his plan all along once he cuts Baalke loose, which York will like more in PR terms than pushing Harbaugh out and bringing the Butcher Tomsula in.
Kelly’s got at least 3 years here before he gets on the hot seat due to the dysfunction you so aptly described as the worst in bay area sports.
Right but what are the odds of success in such an environment? Kelly doesn’t strike me as a stupid person. He too, seems destined to fail at this point with such team management.
Nobody named “Blaine” wins a Super Bowl. That’s a scientific fact. Snake’s win. Joe’s win. Like that.
Based on that Kap is not going to be cut.
“Blaines” date blond debutantes of Bryn Mawr named Bree. More Science. I hope I’m not too technical.
I think that they release Kap. They’ll bite the bullet and hope someone picks him up. But either Kap was a mirage or he had it and lost it or he’s making it easy for the Niners and him to move on.
