The 49ers just finished their first practice of training camp 2010 and, although my brain feels fried from standing in the sun, I’d like to start things off by asking 5 questions to help us frame the season.

1. Is Alex Smith a good enough quarterback. Cohn’s answer: I don’t know one way or another, but I would like him to be.

2. Do the 49ers have the right idea about what a quarterback does? Cohn’s answer: I’m not sure they do. I think they want Smith to “manage” games. Sometimes a quarterback must win a game on his own. I’m not sure the Niners understand or value this. And I don’t know if Smith can do it when he will have to — and he will have to. I am not saying he cannot do it. I’m saying I do not know.

3. Will the 49ers’ offensive line be as good as the 49ers think it will be? Cohn’s answer: I don’t know. The team may depend on two rookies and that’s a lot of pressure to put on rookies.

4. Is Jimmy Raye’s offense complex enough to excel in the league. Cohn’s answer: I don’t know but I hope it will be.

5. We know the 49ers have a very good defense. And good for them. Are their cornerbacks fast enough to keep up with speed receivers, especially on downfield passes? Cohn’s answer: I don’t know, but I sure wonder about this.

So what’s the point: The 49ers need “yes” answers to these five questions to have a successful season. Your thoughts.
