I’m in my Arlington, Texas hotel room drinking my morning coffee and reading responses to my blog, one of the interesting activities of my life. This morning I am learning I’m petty. That may be true, although in real life I’m generally not petty. Maybe I can be in my writing.

Several Zohnists are down on me because I wrote Matt Cain is currently a superior pitcher to Tim Lincecum. This bothered Neal a lot, and Neal is one of the Zohn’s most faithful adherents. Sorry, Neal.

A few points. Cain is a better pitcher than Lincecum right now and if I were the manager I would pitch Cain and not Lincecum in the key game. I see nothing wrong with writing this. It’s not like telling a child there is no Santa Claus. Fans debate things like this all the time — Who’s the best so-and-so? I was doing that kind of debate. Also, I was giving Cain his due — as excellent as Lincecum is, Cain has passed him and become, in my opinion, the No. 1.

This is petty or mean-spirited? Or is simply what you don’t want to hear?

One more point, a point Fred made in his comments. It’s not like Lincecum is going to read this blog and go into a swoon and say, “I refuse to pitch anymore because Lowell said Cain is better.” Somehow I don’t see that happening. This blog is just one guy giving his opinion. After I finish my coffee I’ll begin wondering how Jonathan Sanchez will pitch tonight. I expect to have plenty of opinions on that.  Back at you later.
