On why he’s going back to Alex Smith: It’s a matter of being able to use the entire playbook. Alex Smith gives us the opportunity to do that.

Are you being indecisive going back and forth between Smiths? The thing I have said all along is you go with the quarterback you feel gives you the best opportunity to win. As head coach you have to make decisions based on what you see. Indecisiveness to me is when you don’t do what you need to do and you neglect your responsibilities. There are other teams that switch quarterbacks, whether they’re being indecisive I don’t know. All I know is I want to give our team the best opportunity to win.

Reason for the switch of Smiths: There are more teams that understand this is what (Troy) does, pigeonhole him there and kind of hold the whole offense hostage. Troy, it’s not fair to him and it’s not fair to our offense.

Would you go back to Troy? I’m going to look at what we have with Alex and go with that. Whoever gives us the best opportunity to win that’s where we’re going to go. Alex is the starting quarterback right now. I’m not going to say we’re going to finish the season with him. That’s not where I want to go.

Is Alex an excellent quarterback? How many excellent quarterbacks do you have in the league? I think you have three or four. No, I think he’s a good quarterback that’s working on being a better quarterback.
