I went to see “True Grit” this afternoon. I had my column done and there was no football on TV and it was raining. There is nothing like going to the movies on a rainy day.

Also, I love westerns — “Shane,” “High Noon,” etc.

True Grit is very good, not great. It has all the essential elements of a western. Someone is seeking justice but in the wild west the law is weak and that person has to find revenge on his own — a man does what a man has to do. Except in this remake of an old John Wayne film it’s a girl who seeks justice. Terrific twist on the formula.

Jeff Bridges of course is great as Rooster Cogburn, the burned out drunk who helps the girl, at first unwillingly, on her quest.

The Coen Brothers are great. “Fargo” is my favorite Coen Brothers movie, followed by “No Country for Old Men,” and “Miller’s Crossing.” “The Big Lebowski” is a classic but it’s a case where the character — The Dude — surpasses the movie. The Dude abides. I love that line.

My favorite Woody Allen movie is “Bullets Over Broadway.” I love Woody — I know he’s done creepy things.  But his movies are special and, get this, we both went to Midwood High School in Brooklyn. He was a decade ahead of me. The word is he was manager of the basketball team. “Hey, Woody, can you get me a towel?”
