I’m in the press box at the Coliseum for the A’s home opener, season opener vs. Seattle. This is a nice place to be and that brings me to A’s manager Bob Geren.

He’s gotten a free pass up to now, a pass because the A’s weren’t very good and no one put high expectations on his performance. He’s never had a winning record with the A’s although last season he made progress and broke even. Men get fired for performances like those.

Now the A’s are good and an equally good manager ought to win the division or at least seriously contend. Geren must show he can do this. I am not saying he can’t, but the burden of proof finally is on him. He should welcome that fact.
